Back then all the tire manufactures were running special tires for the factory teams. Michellin had the most advanced tire production machine ever installed in a semi trailer and was literally making custom tires at the track for the factory teams based upon the conditions. It was a large reason why we ended up with spec tires. It wasn't just a Bridgestone thing, it was everyone. Bridgestone just did it better than everyone else.
This isn't a secret. Dunlop was doing the same thing in AMA, Pirelli was doing it elsewhere. Spies and Mladin's tires were rumored to be worth well over a second a lap alone when they ran off a string of 3 straight years of Suzuki winning every AMA race. Doesn't mean that anyone else would have caught those guys with the same tires either.
