I don,t know if it is going to make a difference but I plan on sending my exhaust to them as soon as I get it to have it coated before the first service.

I get mine back next week from being done in Satin black.
Does it make a difference, well I guess that is up to the individual, but I know people who have had it done on their race Bm's and reckon it works, and someone who was head of Ducati racing Australia thinks it is a good idea.....thats good enough for me.

RE: Ceramic Coating for Motorcycle Exhaust

Anyone tried Jet Hot on the exhaust to see if it would help ?

Hey Brickcues:

What is it you need "help" with exactly? Performance or Thermal Control? Both can be achieved, it just depends on your particular goal as to which coatings are best. We offer a multitude of Ceramic Coatings good for up to 2000F+ and specialize in motorsports applications. Below are some color choices and a few previous projects.

Let us know,
Thanks

Need help with thermal. The pipe under the seat gets real hot, trying to figure a way to cut back on that heat.

What all did you get done on yours and how much was it?

Ahhh. Not sure what the surface temp of your pipes are but so long as they're not turning cherry red anywhere, any of the colors would work. The weak link is the Bright Ceramic Coating that many refer to as jet hot. Its rated at 1100F metal temp which translates to about 1400-1700EGT temps.

Many high performance four stroke cycle's / atv's tend to run on the edge of lean or in some cases too fat in areas of the powder band. Both are bad for bright ceramic. In most cases motorcycles can can get away with more in that they always have air circulateing around the pipes. If its a case where you know they are too hot, then any of the other colors including a bright satin not shown are appropriate in that they are rated for 2000F+. We run them on the worlds fastest Outlaw cars making upwards of 3500HP+, so I don't think you'll have any problems.....

I am getting the headers and the 2-1-2 done. I dont have a price yet but I will next week and I will let you know, I will also put up some pics.

i got a quote from jet hot in the 200 to 250 us funds area. which i didn't think was too bad. but they are telling me the red will work fine and have no issues. so i don't know who to believe. i don't want it looking like ... after 5000 km's of riding.

That quote sounds about right.

I have only seen the Chrome and Satin Black after alot of K's and they both looked good still.
I guess you might have to try and find someone who has done different colours and either have a look or get them to send pics so you can be totally sure of what you want to do.

Ceramic Coating on Motorcycle exhaust

CCPcoatingscom - any data on radiated heat with and without ceramic coating?

I have some data from a Ford diesel exhaust test that was done to determine the efficiency of factory heat shields vs a thermal barrier coating on their exhaust. The EGT temps were 1690F and skin temp on the pipe after coating was 746F.

As for the shield vs coating on the same pipe at 1690F EGT. Ambient air at the heat shield was 232F / 185F at 20mm / 40mm. Temp off of the coated pipe was 185F / 141F at 20mm / 40mm.

So they saw a reduction in temp on the pipe of 40%+ and and the Ceramic Coated pipe was approx 20%+ more efficient than the heat shields were.

LOL, you're a wise man to second guess that statement. We've been Ceramic Coating and Powder Coating for close to 15 years. To our knowledge there isn't a bright pigment coating that will hold up to exhaust temps yet. Best out there to date is some material that will go to an occasional 700F (see below). It's really made for moderate temps and brake calipers. Some have tried plasma spray base coat and other Ceramic Coatings, but the top coat still heat soaks and fails. It's just a matter of "when". If the pipe is cooled, i.e. riding, it will work for a bit. Get caught in traffic a time or two and it's over.

We tested these about 5 years ago for a local builder. As soon as the pipes get hot they turn purple. As they cool they come back to red, but the more they are run they eventually stay dark black / purple. The only way this would work is if there were exhaust shields similar to an HD. If there was an air gap they'd prob hold up. Coated directly on the pipe, VERY unlikely.

I wish there were in that we get calls for it all the time.....

MiI, is this "no, it was a noticeable difference" or "no, there was no noticeable difference"? Txs.

lol sorry,,, NOT a noticeable difference. Stuff even chips and discolors under extreme heat. No matter what they say, especially when it first goes on and has not had many heat cycles.

Define "noticable". How did you measure this? I'm assuming you had Bright Ceramic put on your pipes???

I am assuming you know the pipes we are all talking about, to give you an idea of size and length, how much for your shop to coat a set of headers for me?

I am only giving my personal experience on the Diavel. It was a nightmare. Not your company but the leading well known company. It was done in a black finish. the quality was poor and returned twice. Good customer service but poor results. My local ceramic coating guy said he is no longer doing motorcycle pipes because they are effected easily by motors running rich and rain. On a car no one sees it but on a bike its a PITA. I understand and would never ceramic coat again. Also had it done on my Hayabusa and over time it flaked in a few spots. No difference in heat reduction. Again that is JMHO.

Yep understand. When the temps are driven by exhaust heat you likely won't actually "feel" a difference. It is kinda difficult to discern a 30 deg difference when the temp is already at 400-500 deg F. Hot is hot to your legs and other "tender" parts. The coatings definitely "work" when measured with purely objective test equipment.

The deal with JetHot is they have several locations that does their coatings, so it sounds like their quality control is lacking. I had my turbo header (car) coated with their "2000" coating (their Oklahoma City location only) that is rough textured and it performs as expected and has a tough finish that holds up well to handling.
