July Roadracing World Shootout

I take the shootouts with a grain of salt. Every rider and bike combination is different, especially when it comes to stuff like lap times.

I've ridden pretty much everything out there at least once or twice, and there are some bikes that just don't give me confidence. Ironically, it's the ones that usually do really well with the editorial segment of the riding population: CBRs and GSXRs. That probably has a great deal to do with my having been on twins 80-90% of my riding career. A lot of the reviewers are current or former supersport racers, so the Ducs and other big twins aren't always at their best with them at the helm. That's certainly not the case for everyone, but it's a factor worth considering.

Another factor is that the BMW can be faster all it wants...it is still hideous. :D

That's an interesting read. Of the bikes tested, the R had the most HP at [email protected] and the most torque at 82.3 ft-lbs. It was also the lightest bike tested. Perhaps they've reached the other side of the curve when it comes to power to weight ratio. I haven't read anywhere about anyone that can tame this thing. Perhaps it rides right through the capability of the suspension? It's puzzling to me that this thing isn't winning races.

I subscribed digitally and copied their settings as best I could. It also happens I'm running the same tires atm.

It won the Assen round of FIM Superstock 1000. It's leading the points in the class right now. FIM Superstock is MUCH more relevant to the OEM bike's capabilities than Superbike.

Hope it gives you a good base to start from. Wish Chris Ulrich had the settings that Ducati set up for the Panigale R at COTA. Look back a couple of issues, he thought the bike was setup perfectly and had nothing but praise for it. This was after they had already tested an S last year in a shootout and had issues with the handling.

You're right. I was thinking wsbk since that was Ducati's focus in the past. Frankly, it doesn't change my opinion of the bike, but just curious if its geometry, power, chassis, etc...

If its in a magazine or internet it must be true...right?:D

Good thing I don't care or else I'd have to change bikes every time I read a shootout.

I'm sure racing will improve the breed. That was discussed on here before, that all of us with the 2012-2013 Pani's will be the 1098's to the 1198's in another year or so. As we all know, Ducati has the most racing DNA link to their road bikes than any other manufacturer. There is nothing like the crucible of racing to improve the base design, and I look froward to seeing what Ducati does to improve the platform at it's first upgrade (think 2012 S1K vs. 2010-2011, supposedly a "night/day difference" by those who own them and the magazines who tested them)

With all the electronics involved, I just hope that some of the improvements can be retrofitted to my 2012! Of which the most important to me would be a firmware upgrade that allows the use of other brands of tires to keep the TC working as originally designed for the Supercorsas.

Word is the R will receive a firmware and software update to get dynamic suspension.
