Just a sad incident and I never seen this coming

i m a bit confused

take it to sailing... if i sail at 6 knots head on into a 25knot head wind. Why does the apparant wind speed meter then show 30 knots? and the true wind speed dial 25?

and what if it's the other way round.. if i ride 30 and a bike doing 70 hits me from behind : am i struck with the force of 40mph or 70mph?

sorry for the hijack

Go Pro makes everything brutal these days. I'm sorry for your travail, BUT pulling people over in cars you don't know is a really good way to get shot, and I can't help but think that the time you spent "schooling" those kids took you out of your "time slot" and set you up for the meeting with the moron on the wrong side of the road.
The bike to bike head on collisions is why I stopped riding Angeles Crest Highway on the weekends, almost every weekend there were multiple fatalities, bike to bike head ons, it started in the early 90's with an invasion of squids on Gixxers and Ninjas and hasn't gotten any better.

When sailing you aren't sailing into the wind directly always offset at some angle. Since you are sailing into the wind, you feel a wind (apparent wind) faster than you would standing still (true wind). But as your example shows you saw 30 apparent 25 true. If you could sail at 6 knots directly into the wind the apparent would have read 31 instead of 30. Only possible in motor boat.

In the same direction collision it would be 40.

The easy way to estimate is by how much and how fast the direction will change or I will decelerate.

Head on collison by two identical vehicles at same speed will result in both slowing down at the same rate just like running into a wall.

Hitting someone moving in your direction will be less since your rate of deceleration is less.

However if you run into something larger and heavier, head on, you are going to decelerate faster than if you just hit a wall. Same applies if in your direction, the force will be more than if you hit something your own weight.

There's another thread today about guys checking out, some old dude, but then you have these jerks, its not age or anything else its the way it is, two wheels engine or not its Ruski roulette when you mount up!
I have to say the track is the only way to go and maybe I will go that way.
