Here is the close up of the area where the leak is. Where the arrow is is where the crack meets the seam. There is no leak above this area.

Also, if I go the route of opening the case and repairing who would you recommend getting a rebuild kit from (new gasket and seals). Are there any good companies you guys reccomend for getting these parts (oem or aftermarket)?

Yer jumping the gun thinking about parts already. Gotta inspect first AND determine why it broke. When I was 16 I rebuilt a 2000cc vw water cooled motor that had spun a rod bearing when it was practically new (2k miles). My motor didn’t last either it spun another one. VW guru went thru it after the 2nd mishap. It did it again! Finally I gave the motor to VW and they found that a oil passage in the block wasn’t drilled deep enough

Why did your case crack???? Why is it leaking??? I think I remember reading when the bike was first released that Duc lengthened the left swing arm pivot and added the second boss (behind kick stand) to reduce case flex? Were they cracking them? How common is this issue since they did that (does anyone else remember that or did I make it up?) and why did yours crack???? That’s what ya need to find out before looking for parts

*and you Öhlins lovers plz don’t try to blame it on the Mupo shock : )

Tear down has started finally.... (slight delay with summer but back at it now). I'm working it step by step and have pulled both the heads and everything still looks great so the top end is all good. More to come soon

To finally bring a conclusion to this mystery of the coolant leak from the back of the engine I finally got he case split and it has a pretty significant crack in the case so the case it toast unfortunately...

The above was all you could see from the rear and it was only on one side under the ridge below the head on the vertical cylinder. Below is pics of the casing where you can follow the crack all the way directly through the horizontal cylinder case (pic of inside and outside of the block).

Now that it's all apart clear as day...Thanks to everyone who tried months ago to hypothesis but I'll need to find a new case before I can do anything else.

Dude that is pretty fckd up, I would love to know how did that happen, crash, maybe over torqued plug in that second picture…!?
I would not bother with cases since they will cost fortune from Ducati, if you plan on keeping the bike just get low milage motor.
Good luck.

Short story is bought used, the previous owner had is on the track and did a low side. Bike ran perfect and only had very minor scratches but my guess is with these bike the engine is the frame so any falls could case a crack the case.

It rans fine during initial rides when I bought it and it was only after riding for a while I noticed small amounts of coolant leaking from the rear and that when I start this thread 6 months ago. Just took the motor apart yesterday finally after getting some good coaching from @endodoc and now I have the final answer. Totally sucks but I learned how to completely disassemble a 1199 and split the casing in the process (laughing so I don't cry).

Cracked cases

Cracked wheels

These guys need to start melting down better beer cans…

Cuz you all know the flaws could NEVER be coming from any Italian engineering dept : )

Yes, I understand that. It was still "a" rider's fault.
Ultimately. These integrated chassis/engines don’t crash well. There are a few special tools the need to be used to assess the integrity of the engine case/chassis after a crash.
