So I just joined this forum to ask a question I have been going back and forth on for quit some time. The question is should I get a NEW 1299 base model, or a USED 1199 S ??? My budget is around 20k obviously, I just couldn't justify paying an extra 5k for a 1299S. I figured the best people to ask this question to were people who already own these bikes. So please any insight/advice would be much appreciated and taken in to consideration. Cheers . :)

1299. It's just as fast as, if not faster than the 1199S. Better engine (more power everywhere), revised geomety, new styling (looks better IMO), better foot pegs.
I have a 1299 base. It just blows my mind every time ride it :) Surprisingly comfy on the road, insane fast on the track.

Well it all comes down to what suits you best id say, the 1299 is heavier 390 vs 420punds, it has more torque 106.7 vs 99.0 ft-lbs, compression ratio: 13.20:1 vs 12.50:1 , hp 200 vs 205, standard traction and abs on 1299, full ohlins on the s models,

Im still a noob here on forum but i been around bikes, get what u think is easier to ride for you, what ever is easier for you to control, hope that helps,

My advice is to get cheaper version, because you can always upgrade ☺

Get the new bike, always! 2 years of full warranty is worth a lot.

Just make sure that if you go new you find a way to negotiate in Extended Warranty coverage. These bikes are really quite expensive to fix, and with some of the stuff that can (or depending who you ask... WILL) go wrong it is best to be covered for as long as possible.

From what I have heard, the 1299 is just an easier bike to ride in comparison to the 1199. The bump in displacement give it more torque and power, and it has newer electronics.

Follow your heart, then see if your wallet agrees.

which one weight 390?

1299 hand down, lots of small improvements add up to a fast and usable bike
1199 is more high strung, a bit less refined

I was in the same boat you are earlier this year -new 1299 or used 1199S. Do yourself a favor and ride them both back to back. I did and it made a huge difference. No second guessing yourself later. The choice will be obvious and on par with everyone's advice - the 1299.

I dealt with the exact same situation a couple of months ago. I went back and forth for a few weeks. After talking to some very knowledgeable people I went for the 1299 Base. Figuring that it is faster than me even with base suspension, will probably have higher resale value, and I can put better suspension components and comparable wheels and pocket $1500-2000. The only thing missing is those sexy ass LED headlights on the S!!! But I can also tell you I don't regret my decision one bit! Its great on the street bike and a monster on the track! I say 1299 all day!!!!

Why not do both? There may be a new 2014 1199 S out there somewhere for cheap. That's what I did about a month ago. Amazing bike, 24-month warranty and a huge discount.

I don't know what bike you're coming from, but I imagine the jump to a Panigale will be big. You'll be amazed at the handling, engineering, power and sheer fun. Sure the 1299's probably (just baiting, by the way) the better bike, the 1199 S is a great choice that can be had at a significant discount if you spend some time looking.

i had this dilemma when buying my 1199... I was like what should I get the base or the S... (not quite the same due to the new model) but I couldnt justify at the time the price of the S. I went in and bought a base model, spent thousands on rims, suspension, LED headlight, rear sets, etc etc (needed that :D) to get a bike that was better (IMO) then the S. But I could have gotten a great S model bike with lighter rims, LED headlight, Ohlins suspension etc for much cheaper then i put into my base.

Do I regret it? No, but I could have saved a lot of cash and got the S first, the money I put into the base I could have gotten an R in reality.... but at the time my funds weren't as high.

get what you will want in a year from now... I cant speak on the 1299 as I dont have one, just on my experience with getting an S or a base.

I'm on the other side of the trough here.

I bought the S over the base, thinking - like you suggested - that it would save me a considerable amount of money. And then a few days after I bought the S, I ordered BST wheels. A couple of months later, an Akrapovic evolution exhaust followed, and then DP rearsets, and so on. And here I am now contemplating to order new Ohlins forks and shock for my weight from Dan Kyle. OEM Ohlins is pretty much useless for me because I weigh 135lbs in gear.

Case in point, I think a Big part of the joy that is Ducati Superbike (or any bike for that matter) ownership, for me at least, is to "build" it; to make it my own, and inevitably, parts/money Will be thrown at whichever bike as a result. And if that's the case, I think starting out with a base makes the most sense.

Of course, when contemplating between the two bikes at first, Electronic Ohlins gold + steering damper, Marchesini forged wheels AND a full LED headlight, all for less than 60% of what they'd cost to buy individually... I was hooked!

But standing in front of the bike in the showroom the day I bought it, it did not occur to me that I was too light for the gold, and that the feather weight forged Marchesini wheels would become the "chicken feet" design which I couldn't wait to replace with BST carbons. I didn't see that coming. But it did come.

I really envy people who can buy whichever bike, base, s, r, superleggera, or any other bike for that matter, and just be content with it - bone stock out of its box - from the day they buy it, until they have to part with it or choose to move on.

That said, I LOVE my bike. My only regret is that I was not realistic enough when I fooled myself into thinking I'd be done with the bike as it left the factory, and in turn, chose it over the base or R. Financially, it wasn't the smartest decision but then the things that bring us the greatest joy hardly ever are financially smart!

If any given person intends to leave the bike alone and enjoy it, perhaps the S/R models offer a value which should not be ignored.

If any other person, like me, knows it's only a matter of time until they get bitten by the mod bug... perhaps the base is a better place to start.

Take the 1299 for sure, no question. There are upgrades to the 1299 that you can't just go out and buy, where you can always add Ohlins, or Forged rims, exhaust...
