Hands down the SL. That is a very special bike.

I'd agree with you 100% on a 2017 SL. The 14 isn't that special for the price tag IMHO. What more do you really get more over the FE, besides CF bodywork, and Mag wheels that aren't that great looking. ??

I'll say this:

I own an 1199SL that I have put close to 1k miles on. I have never ridden the Final Edition. I am sure that it's a beast of a bike. Does it put out a few more hp than the SL? It should because it's a bigger motor. Would that be the decision maker in which is better for someone? I can't speak for others but for me, it absolutely would not.

When I ride the SL, there are all kinds of very special things about it: the lightness (which you feel everywhere), the special materials and feel and touch that certain parts and controls have. It has gobs of power. I have never, ever one time wanted more power with that bike. Not once have I ever thought to myself that I hope they make a bike with more power. In fact, I think that it has a little too much power and it takes something away from the special feel and lightweight nature of the bike. The light weight is what really transforms that bike and it is readily apparent every time you throw a leg over it and wherever you go with it. I love the bike and in my opinion, it is the absolute high point of the panigale line, even over the 1299SL.

That said, I think that next best bike in the line is the Final Edition. It's not as light as the SL and I know that you would feel it. Also, I don't like the euro 4 crap on it but that will be solved in time. So it goes back to what I said that maybe the only real solution is to have one of each.

I don't know that I can live with the financial hit of both although that's the easy answer. Sherpa, you bought yours right but that was the exception and painful for the original owner. Yeah, you're right - lightness has more benefits than horsepower. The magnesium wheels not giving you any problems - no slow leaks? More difficult to change tires on?

I have both SL,s and the FE the 1199 SL is hands down way better in every way get the SL

No problem just my honest opinion BTW i have 22 Bikes 10 of them are Ducatis Out by Palm Springs lots of mountain roads to wing out my scoots plus a track day nut

No problems with the wheels or anything. Do debate possibly getting BST's and putting the stock ones in bubble wrap on shelves in the basement but not out of fear that they're not good enough.

About price: yes, I bought it right. However, thats the advantage that anyone buying one today can do, and I believe that is the conversation that we are having. Be patient and talk to the sellers and see what happens. I wasn't going to be a player at $72k or whatever it was that the first owner of my bike paid.

What happens in two years when R/FE bikes are $30k with under 500 miles? I would be happy to buy one then and I would say that if 1199SL prices are mid $40's for a comparable bike, that's the right differential. Of course, I have no crystal ball with this stuff so it's just my worthless opinion based on my ownership experience over the years.

When i put new SP tires on the 1199SL took a weight with the new tire on the Mag. wheel when i got home with the 1299SL took a weight talking about the rear wheel with the tire rear wheel 7 miles someone at GP motorcycles had some fun yee haw the difference in weight was less than half a pound man those Mag. wheels are way lite

Got a pimped SL and an Anniversario (which is still EURO3!).
I hate riding the Anni, it's a sick mule compared to the SL.

I second that motion yee haw when i put the race exhaust on the Anni. got the App. head-pipes from GP motorcycles in San Diego Ca. had them install the up-map seemed to pull harder maybe cause its so much louder my friends that have ridden the SL,s thats all they talk about when were on rides those SL,s just ruins people yee haw

So you hang out at Chuckwalla quite a bit then? I'll get down there one of these days - hopefully this winter. You've taken your SLs out there?

my understanding is that FE = Panigale R with 1299 engine

the SL to me is special, each part is customer made with exotic material, spare no expense

If wife would allow it, i would've sold my BMW and my Panigale for the SL.

Worth a lot more then speculators who don't own one or biased sellers.

Well, this dealer has two of them with under 500 miles in like new condition and one of them has been sitting there for over a year or so. I hate to lowball them because their asking prices aren't bad but I don't want to pay for something that drops $15-20K at street price pushing it out the door. It is a crapshoot with the V4 in the horizon. It could drop like that if not more if the V4 is a hit (the Desmo really wasn't at the time) or if it isn't, it could go up.

Well then make the wife take an MSF class if she doesn't know how to ride and then have her demo a Panigale at the nearest Duc dealer. It could backfire on you if she buys the SL and then doesn't let you ride it.....

The FE is the Panigale R with the engine out of the SL minus sand cast cases and the piston liners, for longevity. It's a big step over the Panigale R, even with the euro 4 exhaust.
