At the end of the day, the SL is still a 1199, very optimized 1199 but still a 1199 (at least design wise and concept).

The Desmo may have 1500 units, but it has a V4 engine.

With time, money and patient you can turn a 1199 into a SL but you will never turn a SL into a Desmo.

:)

You can never turn a 1199 into a SL no matter how hard you try. There are only 500. You can make it like a SL and with time even better than a SL, but it will never be a SL, therefore the SL remains quite a bit more exclusive than a Desmo (the SL will incidentally kill a Desmo on the track).

Is the SL really faster than the Desmosedici on the track? That would be impressive.

Even if the SL only exists in 500 units, and the 'Dici has 1,500, the 'Dici is still more exclusive IMO.

Because the SL is just a base 1199 with some white vinyl stuck to it! Haha. We know it's not, but it's still just a gussied up 1199, and there's thousands of them. And those "regular" 1199's are going to make it seem more normal than it is.

Just because most of the limited edition '03-04 red Mustang Mach1's have been properly totaled by now. Doesn't really make mine rare, because of all the Cobra's and GT's out there. At the end of the day, it's just a Mustang still.

Unless a collector is specificly looking for a red Mach, or a Superleggera. It could happen, we'll have to wait 20 more years to see, I guess.

I'd don't expect the SL to be as collectable as the RC30 or RC41. But if Ducati doesn't make any more 'Dici's, that will be.

I have seen a few track tests in the past where the Panigale (S I think) was faster than a Desmo on the track. I have yet to see a track test where the Desmo beat the Panigale (and we are not talking SL). If I track it down I will post it on the forum.
I would be giggling hysterically if Ducati launches a V4 in the future because then one can build your own Desmo as per some on this forum. :p

you guys are hilarious. . You're comparing a 10 year old bike(or a slightly smaller displacement no less) with what Ducati can currently put out and trying to make comparisons on which one is faster. ..

In terms of future value - no one really knows. And most of the SL owners that actually own the bike probably don't give a crap. . They are out there enjoying their bikes is my guess. . In terms of historical basis - the specialized version of one bike isn't quite true either. . There are plenty of SPx series bikes from Ducati that are worth more than what was paid. . That doesn't mean SL will appreciate since it is/was 65K. .

In terms of collectable - I doubt the RC30 will ever be more valuable than the SL, but you're comparing bikes with vastly different production numbers, different era's, and different starting prices.

I would rather own a mint Desmo over an SL... it's a "no brainer" for me. As a Panigale owner, I've never ridden an SL but, have spent some time riding a desmo. The desmo is just incredible to ride even after all these years.. The enjoyment I have riding a desmo would never equal that fully polished up $65K Panigale... that I am certain.

hi guys,

it s fun to see the thoughts flying around...

i d be mightily impressed if the desmo would outrun a pani... even back in the days, the 1198R was as quick ...

and i must say i never really lusted after a desmo... this one caught me off guard , probably with all the stuff on it making it stand out...

and 1 thing really makes it truly different : the sound... it's still Ducati but all other Ducs sound like choir-boys compared to this ... open exhaust and then that raspy vicious growl ... )

she's going in for a complete check up, tires changed as they're too old to be ridden.. all fluids checked, geometry ...

i have a full RS front ( FGR800 + RS triples ) lying about and that will go in to undo her off the non-Ohlins front ... and add some exotisism ...

the only thing i fear is if the engine does not come up with the right BHP, what it will take take here to the top..

and then we'll have to start looking for a track that handles the noise... will prob be Spa in august and Mugello and Magny court in september...

as i do want all the pics... :)

i ' ll post a vid on the sound once she's checked.. :)

Tx guys...

the stock forks on the Desmo do have the gas cartridge and looks but are not FGR... it's a specificly made fork for the Desmo... the FGR is still a league higher spec as far as i know.. from people who do have the stock forks, they are said to be notoriously difficult to maintain and/or service... the purist could say that all GP forks are black and that the gold fgr forks are for WSBK , which the Desmo is not... :)

i think that 1 day, i'll stick a pair of FGR's to my wall... that s how sexy i think they are...; lol !

1 thing is for sure : the WhitePower Factory forks are very high spec but do not belong on any Duc... apparantly they came from Rea's wsbk spec honda from a couple of years ago...
the accosato milled monoblocs will have to do for a while.... :)

Please sir, close up photos of such items when on the bike.
I am a big fan of FGR800, although my meagre life does not yet allow me to touch one.
