Im changing my oil and oil filter, I noticed that the oil filter cover is threaded once the two 8mm bolts are removed. I'd like to try and fit screws to the threads and screw them in slowly as a means of removing the oil filter cover. I used two picks last time and it was a pain in the nuts! Anyone have any experience using this method? If so what are screw sizes need to fit threads? thanks

The easiest way Ive found is to put the screws in part way and pinch them together, and it will grab the back edge of the plate and pop right out. Just make sure you oil the O rings when you put the plate back on.

When I got my bike (used) I found an (to the eye, at the very least) unpleasant surprise:

The previous owner stuck a bolt on the cover, in order to easily get it out.
Hack job which will be undone once I get to the next oil change, but Ducati should really make it easier if people have to resort to crap like that in order to remove it.

Yes a hack job

I recommend getting a new one and or
Doing a wield job fill and grind down, then paint it
Also drilling 2 small holes on the side work so you can use a 90* pick

I think that's what the threads were designed for, because the early 2012 model oil covers weren't threaded. I don't know what size the bolt is to use to get the cover off though.

I already have the new one in my toolbox. Next oil change will go in.

Just do what I did and order an updated cover for $80

I had no idea an updated oil cover was available until niow, so yes I will definitely order one, that will save me cursing an busting finger nails next time I do an oil change.......but the beer drinking will continue.

Anyone have a side by side pic of both oil covers?

They're the same except for the thread in the screw holes.

It would be cheaper to simply tap a thread in the existing screw holes of the earlier oil filter cover to suit the next size up in thread size.
I think it's just an M8 thread?

Yep, DUCATI have been kind enough to help us out there:)
It's pretty much been fitted since the 2013 year models.

-- not sure about pre-2013, but the cover i have has a slot on the bottom side that lets you put a small screwdriver in (or a right angle pic tool) to help pry the cover off
