OIL Levels

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Mine used about 400mls in the first 150 miles or so, perhaps 200ml from there to 650 miles. First service was today so will see what happens next.

Other than one brief smoking at start up early on in that first 150 miles, there has been no smoking at all (other than a melting panel discovered today due to the exhaust spring touching the panel!)
Me too, panel was replaced under warranty. But didn"t get the updated variant with oil window cut out,Bxllxx! ;)

I will certainly be pissed off if the replacement does not include the oil window I currently have.

Has anyone here ever seen a "new" panel with the oil window cut out?? or is it just something we want so bad that everyone THINKS Ducati will update one?

Cheers

Yes, I have one, from the factory, not self cut. Have a look for the Sweet Jesus thread. I have posted a picture.

with bike vertical engine cold oil level needs to be between the two hash marks to the right of the sight glass.

That's what I thought but I wanted to check with the experts first. My bike is woefully low on oil!!! Didn't think I needed to keep such a close eye on a bike with 440 miles on it. Lesson learned and I hope this resolves itself after some more mileage.

....never smoked, doesnt use any oil, probably didn't use any petrol either eh?

alot of riders here reported that the 'disappearing oil' goes away after a few thousand kilometres ran on it. I am sure your issue will be resolved in another few hundred miles. :)

maintain your bike though.. always check molest it in every way possible after every ride. its a very torque-ky machine that needs alot of care.

I put almost a full liter in my bike this morning! I was surprised when I opened the Motul 15w50 and it was green like antifreeze.

you did check the oil upright, ie not on the sidestand right? You want to keep the oil level between the two marks.

Yes...my lovely bride was kind enough to hold it upright for me. I wasn't aware that the oil needed checked every 100 miles or so. Now, I will be the most anal oil checker in the world.

I have done around 700 miles now and so far the bike has never smoked or used any oil. Mine is a base level 1199, but this should not make any difference. AC

Mine is the TRI and it never smoked or used oil, it just went in for it's first service at 1500km and that was done in 4 rides.
I ran it in by the book to 1000, since then it has been on a dyno and I have taken it up to 8000rpm on the road.

I saw a brand new TRI started up on Friday and it smoked, although not much....so I guess it is hit and miss on what you get.

Nah, the oil thing will go away after you get some miles on it. I think I used maybe a hundred ccs or so and I'm nearing 2k miles.''

Hard as Hell

Those who have bikes that are consuming oil did you use a "hard" run in method? Or per the Ducati procedure? Hard run in methods supposed to prevent oil loss/consumption?

Never heard that quote before but maybe that's why I didn't have to add one drop of oil at all, and still haven't! Just adds support to my own way of doing it all these years. Tango Yankee!!

engines are built some have different tolerances and perhaps burn more oil until valves seated and engine has some time on it.

Over the years if I had a nickel for every thread on "hard" vs. mfg. break in, I could've bought a tricolore instead of a base. ;)

I've always stuck pretty closely to the mfg break in, I've had about 15 bikes and have never had issues with oil consumption etc.

Here's an interesting link on the subject Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power

I'll stick with the manufacturers rec. myself.

Just had to stick 750ml in mine this morning!! hadnt checked it for the last 300 odd mile but it was very low! bikes done 1400 miles id of thought it would have cleared up by now.

Gizmo1199 - same for me. Base, oil level in the middle of the the glass at 530mi, very rare puff of smoke on first start after sitting awhile. There were a ton of threads talking to smoking early on in the deliveries. Mabye out cylinders are seated better?
