Hi everyone,
I have to top off around half quart for around every 1,500 miles. Is it normal?

During initial break-in it may happen, but after about, say 5000km (sorry, I'm Canadian and we do not do miles)... If it is still smiking after that, I've heard that it is normal, but I disagree with it consuming that much oil... Bring it up with the Dealer and have it inspected under warranty.

This is NOT normal, this means you do not have a proper ring seal from the engine not being broken in hard enough.

I had the same problem with my after 1000 miles & my Ducati rep from my dealer
said we need to break it in better. Put in on the dyno for a proper break in, more than I can do on the straight... Poof...

No more issues. Common problem with the bike, need to beat on it VERY hard to break in.

You mean ride it with very high RPM?

It's more of an engine load thing.... the idea is to open the throttle wide (5th or 6th gear) and accelerate to a fairly high rpm then let the the motor brake you back to a lower rpm... repeat.

Thats the readers digest version.

This is the full version: Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power

It is a engine load / cylinder pressure or moreso the lack of that. Street riding doesn't allow you legally to cycle through all the gears and put enough load on the motor to allow the rings to seat properly.

You can either take it to the track or dyno it to create this pressure / load.

Simply riding at a high rpm is not enough you need to place enough load on them motor to have them seat.

I beat the hell out of bike (within reason for the street) and it wasn't enough, so I went this route and problem solved.

Somewhat typical for this bike...

3 times already (almost one quart) in 2,600 miles span

So just one quart in 2600 miles?

Sounds about right. Mine went through about a quart from 1st service at 621 until I changed oil and filter at 3500. Not a drop since (now at 6800 mi).

Replacing the piston ring?

thanks guys. Should I bring the bike to the dealer to replace the piston ring since it's still under warranty?

They aren't going to do anything just because you ask them. They have to diagnose it as a defect in materials or workmanship, which is what a warranty covers. There is no defect, they will tell you it is normal.

That is correct..... There is nothing wrong with the biker per-say....

I have 22.000km and have never had to put any oil in it other then reg oil changes. I wood have it check out at your dealer

Have 9,875kms on my Pani....had to top up only during break-in at 800kms, after that...she never needed topping up....just the usual oil/oilfilter changes I do myself every 3,000kms. Changed my oil three times and changed Oilfilter twice.

No smoking issues. Rode the bike pretty hard during break-in.

Love my Pani...getting a set of BST's soon!!!!:D

To break in the engine u dont need 250kmh speed. Engine can break in at 100kmh speed. Dyno is one option but not the only one. Street riding is enough provided u ride normally during first 100kms.

Mine needed top up like others ie first 1000kms. Nothing ever since. Topping up is not a warranty issue. Dealer will claim u didnt follow the break in procedure..
