A picture of the crap I found in the screen. I can't figure out what it is. It is not magnetic. Today I inspected my other bike and there was hardly anything to see in the screen and it has about the same milage.

I didn't change the bearings; to torque the rods I use the tool from the picture; Carrillo wants to torque them on stretch 0.130 mm

Yup, I couldn't figure out for life of me what was crap in my pickup screen, stuff looked like granola crumbles! As I said bike had 2K miles when I cleaned the screen so it had to be something from factory.

Rut ro...

Did you leave a paper towel inside your engine?

The screen in my solvent tank is cleaner than that!!!

Wonder if it is from that free oil filter?

Would you be willing to post a photo of that screen with a quarter or something for scale (unless you’ve already reinstalled it)? Thank you.

Double trouble?

I do not get the factory’s reasoning on that part..

That paper towel in dudes screen coulda went thru the pump and got deposited on the outside of the filter element and his .... would still be running

What are they so worried about that they doubled up??? What’s the logic here?

*Yes I like mick have a critical fault finding mind : )

It’s Ducati, you know same company that wants you to pull a radiator to change a spark plug and tear down the entire motor to get to a gear cog.

Hey Donald what clutch fibers have you been using over the years in that engine??? Oem or aftermarket?

Hard to imagine you having a paper towel in one of the holes (oil fill or breather or the like) and it getting pushed inside without you knowing. Hard to imagine any oil filter doing that too. Even if it were made by Bounty : )

Where else could that crap have come from???

Could it be the coating from the piston skirts???

I never had to change clutch plates yet.

Today I inspected my spare engine. It was used on the track about two years. There was the same crap in the pick up, but a little less compared to the broken engine. It looks a bit like the stuff that is in the filter of a washing machine.

I use my Panigales only on the track and I change the oil and filter about every 500 km/miles. So in both engines I have used almost 10 oil filters. Maybe there is some loose filter material in a new filter. I use HiFlo filters.

But of course in the future I will clean the pickup screen with every oil change.

After so many people including me found this .... in oil pump pick up screen, one has to wonder how many engines have been blown up due to this "unexplained" phenomenon from Bologna!?

My screen had seen 7400 miles and a few oil changes and didn’t have anything in it

It always got oem filters and always will

Sorry for your loss

Gotta agree with Don on this one. close to 20K on the 1299 engine that just had a refresh. Pump filter, clean, oil filter screen, clean. OEM filters only. I changed the oil and filter 100 miles after first assembly and every 3K since. Same procedure this round. Engine internals looked brand new. Oil pump cavities were clean. Cam journals and caps were free of noticeable wear. Valves were in spec, main and rod bearings were replaced but didn't need to be. Attention to detail is key and don't use questionable aftermarket parts. Be interested to see what that material is.

Just to clarify, my engine didn't blow up!
My bike has only 2300 miles and I checked screen when I was installing metal water pump gears. Now this bike is track bike only and it gets oil changed every two to three events with Motul 300V 15/50 and Ducati filter. So lack of maintenance suggestions have no foundation to stand on, I strongly believe that this .... has to do something with
factory assembly or filtering media from filter element is separating from the housing!
That is only cloth looking material put in engine on a regular basis.

There is no chance that .... came in the motor from Italy. They might not be built in a pressurized filtered room but come on. I have built motors in the pits, in a shed, the bed of a pick up - no issues like that

It’s too small and simple of a assembly for a shop towel to be left inside of it (happens sometimes on larger stuff tho : )

It’s from a bad filter...

It’s gotta be

Dude you can't categorically say no way it came from factor, worse things than that happened before...
e.g one ....... bad "O" took space shuttle down...!?
There is common denominator in all the cases of crap in pick up screen, from Australia to US to Netherlands which is oil filter! As I stated above...

Ha let me clarify. What I meant was, I agree with Don on using OEM filters. Not necessarily that the filter was the issue. Only way to know is assay the material.
