OZ Piega vs. 1199 base wheels vs. 1199S wheels

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I do have the anodized gold 5 spoke OZ piega Forged wheels on my TriS. I use them during trackdays and occasional Ducati Cup Series races with rain tires.

So I have two sets for track use. Looks wise, the Oz piega looks so trick...but on the performance side, the stock "S" forged wheels should be better for racing as they are lighter...but honestly, my lap times seem the same with both forged wheels.

Yes, they are slightly heavier than the oem Forged "S" wheels...

Purchase any good OEM Forged Aluminum "S" wheels from eBay....its a no brainer purchase.

I got 1199S wheels on the way. I finally got around to installed an Ohlins TTX. What an improvement. Feels a bit over sprung with the 95nm spring that I bought it with, but yet another order with Ducati Omaha will rectify that.

Ohlins cartridges for the marchshit forks are on the short list...should have bought the S.

At least you can part it out down the road and get some of your money back. Plus, with the upgrades in place, you will have a better bike than the S.

Some facts and figures for the curious...

1199s forged and 1199 Base case wheel weights.

1199s F Wheel = 6.8 lbs (w/ bearings, no rotors/spacers)
1199s R Wheel = 7.8 lbs

1199 Base F Wheel = 9.4 lbs (w/ bearings, no rotors/spacers)
1199 Base F Wheel = 12.2 lbs

Difference F = -2.6 lbs
Difference R = -4.4 lbs

Supercorsa F = 9.4 lbs
Supercorsa R = 14.2 lbs

I have a question
I asked about this once before to little avail
What's the difference in English with weight savings on wheels
Does it matter that much how the weight is saved ?
I mean bst wheels are clearly lighter than a Base 1199
So for example if you save 6 pounds on wheels what does that equate to in sprung weight
And is there a horsepower calculation for unpsrung weight equivalent ?

Thanks guys

MOI is the most crucial factor on wheel weight, the lower the moment of inertia the quicker it can accelerate decelerate and change directions, less gyroscopic effect. Reducing un sprung weight never hurts either

This will really blow your mind.

The weight of the tire matters more...

For a little while. Then the mighty panigale shreds the tyres to pieces and little is left that they no longer matters.

Except 899s. Them tyres last quite a while...

:p

The Marchesini may be more, but very light, and do come in gold - when I mounted mine, it felt like I had been pulling a trailer with the base wheels.

With bearings/spacers:
Front: 6.04lbs
Rear: 7.76lbs

Remember, each ounce of weight reduction on the rim = 24 lbs @ 100 mph.

Marchesini's websits lists the M10RR magnesium wheel at 7.8kg (17.16 lbs) for the set. Sadly they are about $2k more for a set then the going price for 1199S forged aluminum wheels.

I've read so many different "equivalent" ratios. That one seems very much on the extreme end of things.

You can Google yourself into a pretty deep rabbit hole reading about light wheels. Everyone has a different ratio to throw out there, but there's an agreement that having lighter wheels is a definite performance increase.

Yea, they are pricey. I got them for $2100 almost 3 years ago from Omnia racing, now they are up to $2300

forged Marchesinis are light. Not the lightest, but light enough. I figured by buying an S, having light wheels (and Ohlins) as stock would dissuade me from spending money on wheels and suspension. It has.

If I had to do it again I would have bought the S. Did the LED headlight, TTX rear shock, 1199S wheels, going for Ohlins fork inserts this winter.

I'm looking for new wheels this winter, but I'm confused about why Piega R and Cattivas aren't suitable for road use? I like the design, and they are as light as they come, but if they shouldn't be used on the roads for some reason...

Definitely not a "few" pounds more. They're about 2 pounds more than the S/R wheels but still about 4.5 pounds lighter than the base wheels. I highly doubt you will feel the 2 pound difference. You will though notice the sexy Piega look and the chicken feet look. That itself is worth the higher cost and 2 extra pounds.

I couldn't disagree more.

Some people spend hundreds to remove grams. 2lbs of rotational mass is huge. And no "sexy look" is worth 2lbs of rotational mass.

But of course, that is just my opinion. It all depends on where ones priorities lie.

I put BST's on the 675, Forged Magnesium Marchesinis on the R1 and Forged Aluminum Marchesinis on the R6.

Of the 3, the 7-spoke Genesi wheels on the R6 are my favorite. They are lighter than the 10-spoke Magnesium ones on the R1.
