Paint protection kit

I also ordered one - seems like a good idea given all the threads about the paint issues.

I think I will get it installed - I don't want to mess it up plus it gives me (another) opportunity to have a long ride.

That's good business for them. However, after finding out that they wanted £80 to install it, I think I will have a go myself.

Tank protectors and tank paintwork damage

Update: Ducati have now agreed to replace my tank under warranty, but they gave the service manager at my dealership a lecture about removing the tank pad carefully  Sort of redundant as there's no way another one of these Ducati tank protectors is going on my bike.

The problem with the protectors 96901212A (Carbon) or 96700112A (Clear) is two fold. Firstly they don't stick down fully and as the areas of glue that don't stick attract grit, the pad then damages your paintwork defeating the point of applying it. If you have the clear pad, you'll see if it's not stuck down corrrectly, but with the carbon one you won't be able to see if this is happening.

The second problem is that when you try to remove the pad, because is looks s**t half stuck down and has grit under it, you'll find damaged paint underneath, even if you do remove it carefully. It's my believe that either the glue on the back of the pad damages the tank paintwork or that the tank paintwork is of poor quality in the first place, probably the former looking at it closely. Ducati believe I just yanked the pad of and therefore damaged the paint. You decide.

My advice is don't put one of these on your tank in the first place. If you are going to use one, have your dealer put is on. If you already have one and never expect to remove it, then don't worry. If you do plan on removing it, again have your dealer do it and make sure you remove it before the warranty runs out.

I'm going to wait until there's a proper carbon fiber type protector and put paint protection film on in the meantime.

Ive put the carbon one on mine but over the venture shield paint protector, as i found with just the film on the tank the constant rubbing against the tank was causing the venture shield to ripple ever so slightly.
There is a slight issue with adhesion at the bottom of the tank protector even though i followed the instructions to the letter.

Bugger, I've bought the ventureshield tank protection and was hoping to get away with using it on its own (without adding the Ducati tank protector) I used the tank protection on my last bike (Repsol Fireblade) but only on the sides as I'd already fitted a tank protector and it worked really well protecting 'thigh rub'.

I'll email carbonvani and ask if they can make a real carbon fibre one, like this Triumph one I have fitted to my Daytona:

Triumph Daytona Carbon Fibre Tank Pad

Rather than stick the Triumph one on with the supplied double sided sticky pads, I used a tiny bead of clear exterior silicon sealer to stick it on. This gurantees nothing can get between the protector and the tank and its easy to remove too. Just use masking tape to hold it in place overnight while the silicon sets and its all done in the morning. If you're sparing with the silicon no triming is required. You want a 2mm to 3mm bead all the way around the back edge about 2mm in from the edge. Applying it is a one shot deal as you can't move it around without smearing the wet silicon sealer, so practice putting it in place and put some masking tape alignment marks on before you begin.

HI,
I own a Ducati Panigale 1199S and I’m looking for a real carbon fibre tank protector. Ducati sell stick on tank protectors, in clear and carbon effect, but I’ve had one of these and it didn’t stick properly. When I removed it I then discovered the glue on the back had damaged my tank. As I’m having a new tank fitted I want to fit a better quality tank protector.

I have one of these fitted to my Triumph Daytona, would you be able to make one like this for the 1199?

<picture of triumph tank pad>

I’m sure there would be lots of demand for it and I’m happy to promote this to other 1199 owners via Ducati 1199 Forums - Ducati 1199 Forum for Ducati 1199 Riders, if it can be made.

Many Thanks,
Graham

Email sent - I'll let you know if I get a response.

I heard using lots of Windex helps. I'll take some pics once I get the kit. Only parts I'm worried about are the tank areas where stretching is required.

Panny did you already applied this kit ?
I want to see it on a Tri :)
At the same time i wonder if it's needed on the Tri as the weakest parts is the front section, wich is already covered by the tricolore decal.

There's nothing to see, these kits are invisable when applied correctly. The only way you can tell the kit has been applied is if you get real close and can spot the edges.

The tricky bits are where it wraps round the edge between the upper and lower half of the tail section and the pieces that go down the front edges of the farings either side of the rad. I think it would still add a lot of protection to the tricolore beyond the white decals.

Al right you got me there, just wanted to see his Tricolore some more :p

i added my ventureshield couple weeks back good piece of kit had one on my 848 and are well worth it my tankpad has been ok tbh but i removed it with the hairdryer prior to fitting the kit, removed the backing off the pad and added 3m double sided tape and it has worked a treat,:D

I spent Friday afternoon putting my Tankslapper 3M kit on and very pleased. Couple of bubbles here and there but fluid should eventually evaporate. I've had it on my GSXR and BMW and found it gave a bit more tackiness to grip with but this one has made it more slippy? So with the very slippy seat and now tank area I need to do something for grip. Might have to go with stomp grip but worried it will take away from the asthetics of the bike. Hardly notice it on my GSXR as its black on black. Anyone put one on a Pani yet?

put on several pieces of the tankslapper 3M kit today also, feels pretty sticky to me, compared to the regular tank... ??? will have to see how it goes with the leathers.
first time ever install, guess it went alright. not perfect, but it's there to protect, not to shine ;-)

i think it is really a good bang for the buck!
