I believe he is referring to bikes being electronically limited to 186 mph. Some reports say the R's speedo goes blank after 186 mph, but the bike keeps accelerating (unrestricted).

Yep, There was an agreement between the Bike manufactures back in 2000 to limit the Bike speed to 186 +/- a few. There use to be a Top End speed war and various Governments around the world were going to regulate it for safety concerns so the bike manufacturers agreed on limiting the top end speed to 186 to prevent government regulations, now they just have a wars on how fast they can get to 186.

If you hit a wall at 186MPH or 220MPH you still would look the same to me.

Yes, the bike pulls past 186, but the speedo does not. Confirmed by Nicky Hayden.

The wander happened on my bike, too, originally, at speeds over 150. New tires solved the problem. Tightening up the damper (on my bike) only made it worse.

as tightening up the damper to solve a problem mostly always does.. :)

Hero, i' hate the word "awesome" as it is used for a guy lacing his shoes to the Guggenheim in Bilbao. this said: i do would like to use it here twice:

1. The R surely made that impression on you :)
2. Your delightful review made that impression on me!

as said by many: apart from the people at Borgo, you must be the best placed man on earth to judge and the bike and the difference.
ever so gratefull..

AH: thanks for a great review. you have greatly increased my anticipation as I watch the snow melt before taking delivery after Easter. really enjoy your writing - keep it coming!

"Stock pegs still don't inspire confidence, but Sidi boots make up for a lot of the deficiency."

A.H. Which Sidi boots were you using?

Sorry if I back track a lil here, been bouncing off different forums.

So it's confirmed Hayden hit 196mph on the R?

Also, yes once I hit 186 my speedo reads ---. But feels like it still pulls a lil more. Anyone figure out how to bypass the governor yet on the Pani? Thanks.

one lighter guy on a kitted base pulled real 186 mph (GPS datalog) at the end of the aragon straight last week...

you hit 186 and you took time to look at the speedo???

Just happy I can give back to the Ducati Community.

Second to the most expensive! (Don't know the exact ones.)

So here's the real question...if you could do it all over again, would you buy the R over the S if it were available at the time?
Without hesitation.

Hayden said that the engineers told him 196. He had no way of knowing because his speedo cut out like all the others, but every bike was running GPS. (Engineers took the data with them at night to analyze.) 196 is what was printed on the Ducati track maps as the speed the R hits, too.

My speedo read in km/hr and, in race mode the speedo is tiny. I wasn't about to start doing conversions while trying to judge brake markers at the end of the straight, but I did see over 270 km/h several times well in advance of the braking zone. Considering my corner speed prior to the longest straight was way below where it could have been (and considering I was braking early), 196 doesn't seem like an impossibility for a GP rider.

315 km/h should satisfy most speed freaks and scare the hell out of the rest, me included :D

+1. I did 315km on a ZZR1100 back in 1990. Speedo speed. GPS didn't exist back then. It was fast enough. Did 285 on my S last year. Top speed is not so important to me anymore. Agility and cornering is.

Ha! I did 176mph in 90 on my ZX11, only because I heard it could (175) - but now with all the personal postings, youtubes, stc, I know exact;y wha my Pani can do, so not as important to prove it to my self. The ZZR was tested to 176, not sure how you made 195.

It was 315 on the speedo with wind in the back I suppose. You could easily peg the speedo past 300 (184). The ZZR1100 here in Europe got up to 285 exactly measured km. So 10 percent speedo error.
