I agree.... I do not think its normal....Whats your oil consumption???

I'm still monitoring it.....which isn't easy....you tilt the thing up right n it looks like u have all ur oil....but when I took my bike in for 4500 oil change....I had lost a quart....it wasn't even smoking then....is there another way to monitor oil....meter or something....or is the window the only way?

These things will smoke a bit on warm up.
Yes the window is the only way;) What more do you want?
The only conclusive way to check oil level on the 1199 is to check in the morning after it's cooled right down after a reasonable ride(10 kms or more) the day before.
It takes ages for all the oil to fully return to the sump from the extremeties of the engine internals, and the oil has to cool right down because hot oil expands.

Though it's interesting to note (through observations) that I think the oil temp on the 1199 bears a very close relationship to the coolant temp. It's possible the oil/water heat exchanger is very efficient whilst the engine is operating.

Refer to the owners manual for the correct procedure for checking oil level.
Set your level exactly at the top line as a fixed point of reference and record the odometer reading.
Then only top up when it gets to the bottom line. It's about 150 ml from the bottom line to the top line. Record distance travelled at the time of top up and the exact/measured amount of top up oil.
Monitor over a period of time and religiously record the figures in a note book to establish consumption trends.

For your reference.
If your using 1 liter/1000 kms then it's borderline problematic.
More than this, and you most likely have a warranty case. But unless it's documented according to my recommendation above, then you may well be wasting your time talking to the dealer should you decide to pursue warranty.
Less than this and you really won't have much of a warranty case. But you could try anyway just to see how you go for giggles.

More info required please.
The following is rather critical.
What brand, type and grade of oil is in the bike and are you toping up with the exact same oil?
Are there any "oil leaks"? (i'm not talking about a weep)
Also what's your riding style (Honest assessment please)?

Mine smoked like a chimney until about 150 mi, then it tapered off until 600 mi. Now I have no smoke at about 3K. I don't think it's normal, but it's probably okay unless you're burning through a noticeable amount of oil.

I am not aware of my bike specifically smoking but even at 2,300 miles it is drinking oil. I am now logging the amount vs miles and may have to take it back. My gut feel is that it is more than 1litre per 1000miles.

That seems very high..But mine never smoked but did use oil in fairly large amounts as well until it got to 5000 miles...what oil are you using???

Motrol 10-40 fully synthetic as provided by the dealer.

I have no idea if this is coincidence or not but mine stopped using oil when I switched to Motorex 15w-50... was using Motul 300v previous to that...

Funnily enough I saw a bottle today and realised I had misnamed the oil. Motul of course being correct. I may change, however, 10-40 defo fits in with the temp range of where I live.

yep I've been running 10w/40 in all my ducs for years now. I use amsoil, I'm not sure it's available overseas.

Smoking Panigale Sorted....try this. Mine used to smoke like a ..... and absolutely fecking drink oil. Went to Nurburgring on the 1199 in June. I took half a litre of oil but used it all up on the ride from uk and a few days there. Anyhow, no shell available so called in at an ohlins suspension place a couple of miles from the ring. He didn't have any shell only fuchs but luckily he new the Ducati Germany Tech Manager and gave him a call. This guy said Fuchs was fine to mix with shell and to use 15w50. My dealer assured me the correct oil is 10w40. Anyway, as I used the bike and kept topping it up, consequently diluting the shell 10w40 the smoking stopped. Now is almost pure Fuchs 15w50 and it doesn't smoke at all. Either it's the switch to the thinner oil or the change from shell to Fuchs. Anyway, check what oil it is, and if not change to 15w50 and see if it works.
