Panigale Still Smoking

I have no idea if this is coincidence or not but mine stopped using oil when I switched to Motorex 15w-50... was using Motul 300v previous to that...

Smoking Panigale Sorted....try this. Mine used to smoke like a ..... and absolutely fecking drink oil. Went to Nurburgring on the 1199 in June. I took half a litre of oil but used it all up on the ride from uk and a few days there. Anyhow, no shell available so called in at an ohlins suspension place a couple of miles from the ring. He didn't have any shell only fuchs but luckily he new the Ducati Germany Tech Manager and gave him a call. This guy said Fuchs was fine to mix with shell and to use 15w50. My dealer assured me the correct oil is 10w40. Anyway, as I used the bike and kept topping it up, consequently diluting the shell 10w40 the smoking stopped. Now is almost pure Fuchs 15w50 and it doesn't smoke at all. Either it's the switch to the thinner oil or the change from shell to Fuchs. Anyway, check what oil it is, and if not change to 15w50 and see if it works.

I had the same deal...see above...

Factory fill is 10w-40 grade.
I'm not even sure that it's Shell Advance Ultra, and it could even be the next tier down mineral oil. I haven't been able to get to the bottom of it yet.

The thicker grade is not necessarily a key factor in determining the cause of the oil consumption, but it certainly is a consideration.
The volatility index of the oil is more important;)
For example if one had a thicker grade oil(15w-50) with a lower volatility index than an equivalent thinner oil(10w-40).
Then in all likelihood the thinner oil could burn off less.
Usually though the thicker oil would have the better numbers to start with.
Naturally a different formulation could change the dynamic dramatically.

Having said that, if one hasn't achieved oil control then it really won't matter what oil is in the engine as it will use it excessively regardless.

Cheers

Brad...It appears (anecdotally admittedly ) that using a thinner oil somehow does reduce oil consumption... Mine has dropped to zero.. now I know this could also be a function of the rings finally seating after 5k+ miles... but I am beginning to wonder if its not coincidence.... that using this different grade of oil isn't connected in some way.????

Steve, likewise. Since starting to use 15w50 in Germany, the difference is unbelievable. I was concerned about the amount of oil being used prior, but after 2 days of topping up with Fuchs Silkolene 15w50, I honestly haven't added a drop and I did a 600 mile ride home and done another 400 since then. With shell 10w40 I would have used a litre.......funny though about the mileage, mine now is at 5400 miles....rings finally setting ?

Bob... I really have no idea.... it could be rings seating...but as you say its almost more like a switch... it wasn't gradual... wouldn't ring seating be gradual??All I know is I am soooo happy about this :)

Mine stopped smoking on startup within the wear in period. Now it only smokes if throttle is played with abruptly when the engine is still warming to running temp, below 140F or so I imagine, as I saw when the dealer idled a fresh oil change for about a minute wrapped the throttle during the first service. My only concern is how long will the spark plug last? Also the manual states no fuel additives recommended, so how do we keep the injectors and valves clean? Are they self cleaning? haha

During major service intervals or the 30000?

Injectors on these things wont get too badly affected by fouling.

Plugs, backs of exhaust valves, piston crowns and combustion chambers, may be a different story.
I run a very effective but safe injector cleaner all the time, and it also inproves combustion.
Without it, the engine is quite raspy and protests a little more on the over-run and is not very smooth.
With it, the engine is smoother all round and has a nice consistant burble on the over-run.

What fuel additive is safe for use and recommended by reputable Ducati authority? Thanks

Wow!!....i never heard of 15-50 fixing the issue.....imma have to try that.....as far as fuel additive.....i use ethanol defense from bell

2013 tricolor. Just had first service done and bike has 750 miles. Some white smoke on start up. Once warmed up, no more white smoke.
