In the very early stages of planning a trip to the west coast to ride along the Pacific Coast Highway either early fall this year or spring next year. Plan on trailering the cycle and setting up base camp somewhere along the coast (probably north of LA) that I can do day or 2 day rides from. Any thoughts on what the best sections are? Best scenic routes, least traffic, things I shouldn't miss? Thanks for input...

To me PCH doesn't get good till your above Santa Barbara, Moro bay ,San Simieon, Monterey, I would say santa Barbara and work north. North of Frisco is great. It depends on how much riding you want to do. If you based out of Eureka it would be cheaper lodgings and work south. Famous quote from Mark Twain was "the coldest winter I ever spent, was a summer in San Francisco"

+1 But I would start a little further South like Malibu/Agoura and do a run on Mulholland to the Famous Biker Rock Store (Everyone should do the Snake at least once). and then head North on Hwy 1 PCH. Hit the following:

1. Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara Pier
2. Guadalupe - a little town if you blink you might miss it but stop by the Far Western Tavern (a famous Biker Tavern good food).
3. Pismo Beach - beautiful scenery
4. Availa Beach
5. San Luis Obispo
6. Morro Bay
7. Cambria- Tons of Winery
8. San Simeon - Hearst Castle
9. Big Sur
10. Monterey -Cannery Row, Pebble Beach, Aquarium, Seaside, Laguna Seca
11. Santa Cruz - Board Walk
12. Half Moon bay
13. SF- Pier 39, Golden gate
14. Sausalito
15. Napa Valley all the way up to Eureka is just mind blowing

Its one beautiful ride. I always take California for granted until I drive up the coast and it reminds me how beautiful this state really is.

Funny, I do the same with Colorado (minus the coast part).

Was thinking about setting up in Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo area for 3 or 4 days and ride north and south from there. Then move north of San Francisco and do the same. May actually be camping, haven't decided yet.

Thanks for the info!

Section between Hurst Castle and San Fran on 1. Then north of SF up past Fort Brag. I personally think one of the best spots in the world is the section from Bodega Bay to northern California border.
