Performance Comparison: 1199S 15/41 gearing vs 1299S

I rode the 1299S with Full Akra yesterday at The Ridge. It was cleverly disguised in my 1199R track bodywork :).

Anyway, its a beast. Power-wheelies out of pretty much every turn. It was fairly cold, and I was actually spinning up my 899, but the 1299 would hook up. I was having some trouble with headshake, even down the straight. It was difficult to use full throttle even in 4th gear. There is a bump near start/finish which would cause the front end to come up even in 5th gear. Once I had a few laps on it, and learned to relax, the front end settled down a bit and I was able to sort of keep it under control, but it accelerates frighteningly fast. Throttle control was impeccable, and I had no trouble negotiating the super slow turn 13-15 "Ridge Complex" switchbacks.

More to follow!

That's awesome man, riding on the edge the whole time lol... I've heard nothing but great things about the ridge... post some pix....

Oh does it pop and bang on up shifts just like the 1199's do with aftermarket slips ons?

No, there were a few pops, but nothing like the Superleggera, which gives you an always rewarding BOOM with most every upshift. The new Akra pipes turned an awesome looking hue of blue near the joints though that really sets it off.

This is really too much bike for The Ridge. The power does nothing at all for laptimes, but boy is it fun! In its defense, the throttle control is good enough that at least you can ride it like a 600 when you need to.

that is a pretty impressive graph for the 1299. It's about 30 - 40 hp up on the R1 for most of the usable rev range.. The torque figures are even more in favor of the 1299.

You can also see where Ducati have made big strides over the 1199R in the bottom end and midrange... Also interesting that the R's power hasn't really started to fall much, even at 12,000 rpm; makes me think that it could be good for another 500 rpm.

Those really are pretty stout numbers for the 1299, on a not broken in engine. I would expect to see at least another 5-7 hp once the miles reach 2,000+. My BMW S1000RR with full race Akrapovic, BMC race filter and a custom flash, made 184.6 hp at peak and had NOWHERE like the mid range that the 1299 has, not even in the same Universe.

I am looking forward to see what the 2015 Panigale R and the 1299 with full Akra make...

So here are the charts with the full Akra system. They were not advertising big top-end gains, so I was not dissapointed to see only 3 hp gain up top. It did gain even more in the midrange though. The most interesting result of this study is that I LOST 2 hp and 2 lb-ft by taking the DB killers out of the AKRA system. It could be that it was mapped for them, but whatever, I don't have any tuner on it, so I have to run the DP upmap. Keep the DB killers in. Their diameter is bigger than the Termis anyway... The Akra system fixes the 5-6k slump that has plagued the stock bikes, and the Termi-equipped 1199's. Yay!

Power was incredibly linear and controllable on the track, just have to sort the chassis to use it... The best comparison I can think of for this bike's torque curve is that it feels like riding a 450 dirtbike, with midrange power-wheelies on command in virtually any gear.

Dammit, it didn't take my attachments before:

Great comparison on the 450 MX bike thing. That's the fun factor of it, to try and tame it. I'd rather have a blast than put up good lap times lol

Main reason I bought the bike over an R1, the fun to ride factor

Follow-up on the topic of this thread, just like I thought, no need whatever for the 41t sprocket. We have some work to do to keep the front end settled as it is. Coming off the 1199R bike, I was hitting the rev limiter on this bike by sound until I got adjusted to it, so definitely appreciate the taller gear for that too.
