Hey all,

I am looking at picking up a 1299S or 1098S in the future and am just at the beginning of my search. I have owned other liter bikes in past R1 couple S1000RRs etc.

I am just wanting to ask you guys that own them a few questions? I am probably going to have to buy a bike out of state due to my state not having a large Ducati owner group there is a dealer here but they don't seem to ever have any Used Superbikes in Stock. They just want to sell me a new V4 and to be honest I am not that wild about the styling on the V4. I know its an incredible bike and step up etc I just have wanted to own a 1199/1299 since I saw one day they came out at local dealer.

What should I be looking for when buying used? Are there any known problem areas that need addressed? What is reasonable mileage? What is a fair price on a 1299S these days? I have read some ads saying you can somehow get a warranty on a used Ducati through a dealer? How does this work?

It seems like mileage is all over on these bikes some have 500 Miles and some have 15K? If the bike has been tracked does it hurt the value and is there any real way to know how the bike was used prior? Are alot of the lower mileage examples track rats? Does tracking these bikes really degrade them all that much? Some times I am a bit suspicious of one with 1000 miles that is 4 years old like was it just sitting in a living room or was it tracked out of a trailer...

Also I wanted to ask you guys about the heat? I do live in a hot southern climate and is the heat really bad on these bikes? I do have an older Honda VFR and the frame rails where your knees rest get too hot to touch but you just get used to it. I have heard people say its completely overblown to they are unusable due to the heat? Some have said the comfort seat helps somewhat? I have seen the heat shield kits mentioned as well. Some people have said to use a programmer to lower the temp the fans come on?

Thanks for any help!

don’t worry abt the heat & it won’t bother you. As long as u ride with long pants on, the frame/engine won’t burn u.

I purchased mine in August 2019 for $16,172 out the door with Pa tax and registration. It had 1,800 miles on it and the Akrapovic slip on exhaust already installed.
being 4 years old, it needed brake, clutch fluids renewed as well as new coolant and engine oil changed. I will have fork and rear shock oil renewed at next oil change.

I did have the bike complete modded at this point with clear clutch cover, aluminum brake andclutch fluid resoviors, tail tidy, LED turn signal mirror knock off plates and a bar end mirror. Radiator guards, Ducati spacers...

it wasan Extra $6k worth of parts, some of which I ordered through motomillion, some of which Ducati dealer ordered for me and all service install was completed dealer.
I can give you a breakdown of my work order if you need it

I am beyond happy with my 1299S and would highly recommend one for you

Also are there any years to avoid? Did after first year the bike get some fixes? Anything like that?

Good point, your local Ducati dealer will be able to get you updated on any recalls.
It seems like the 1299 is such a close derivative to the 1199 that it was able to avoid the teething issues from the start

I just recently paid 12k for a mint stock 2015 1299S with 1477 miles. It is getting shipped by HaulBikes for $500. All said and done 12.7k OTD as I don't put any value for used bikes at DMV. It already has all recalls done and all fluids refreshed. Time to put some crash and radiator protection, adjustable levers and ride!

I love my 1299S, but the above quote is a lie. The heat can be intense and It does bother people. You will likely need a good pair of pants or you will be looking for heat remedies.

The 15k mike service is expensive so lower miles means more riding before you get hit with the valve adjustment costs.

Put some extra heat shielding on that bad ... machine and you’ll be in great shape.

Don’t go to the beach if the sand is going to bother you

Thanks for reply's! I am actually selling another bike at the moment to get room in my garage for the 1299.

Sounds like there are some deals to be had. See a lot of them on eBay for $17K+ so nice to see some of you have gotten them for cheaper.

The heat stuff is no big problem. I installed the shifttech carbon heat shields on my 1299s when I first bought it in 2015, and have never after that had any issues with heat

Is it normal for the bikes with the Ti Akra System to be blue all the way down the pipes? I have seen headers turn blue but seems a lot of the Ti Akra the whole system turns is this a sign its been ran hard or just how these bikes are?

Thanks! Would you guys buy from only a dealer? Or is PP ok with an inspection by a dealer?

Some of you guys have found some deals seems around $18K is going rate with lower miles? How much extra would you pay if it has the Ti Akra system?

The bike is not delivered yet and I already have T-Rex protection package, ebay radiator guard, throttle spacers and Heat shield kit.

I would not pay a dime more for the akra, which is precisely why I don’t mod my bikes. Buyem, ridem, sell it.

It’s up to you but the seller can always take off the accessory and sell on the side.

Yeah let the guys that have all the $$$ go out and load up the new model every couple years, then we can come along and scoop one up at a price we can afford.
I think the Akra sounds more full, deeper kinda like a hot rod but at the same time kinda like a Cub Cadet or Hustler Super Z

being that Akra costs so much brand new, it’s highly sought after to find a used Ducati with it installed but in reality I didn’t expect to pay any more than a bone stock one.

I bought my 2015 1299S in August 2019 for $16K out the door. 1,800 miles and Akra slip on installed (which I think was around $4,300 when original owner had them do it.

on every upshift it pops real loud, because there are no cats and it’s a nice loud exhaust. so to me, it’s a real enhancement worth the $$$ useless u can find a used bike with one on it.

my bike was manufactured 5 years ago and I’ve had all the fluids replaced as well as accessories installed. Today it received a DucaBike clutch slave cylinder as the old one was beat. Clutch action is so smooth now I love it. Slightly longer friction zone too

lastly, I was quoted $560 for the 7,500 mile service and $2032 for 15K (Desmo valve service)
