not a fan of carbon fiber for anything structural.....over time....

Traditionally, me neither but it depends. Having worked with a lot of it on these last few bike projects and integrating quite a bit of it into some aviation projects I am working on, it is pretty interesting material and very versatile from a composition perspective. However in this case, I am not a big fan of the frame or the swing arm. I have a 1098 BST CF swing arm in a box here and i know they work but im not riding on it and im sure as hell not falling on it. The frame is a different story. I already hate the limited air box situation and your going to have to build a lot of geometrical and torsional engineering into the thing and you not saving much at all over the SL mag frame. A Titanium trellis frame like the Pierobon would have been more interesting. Wheels?. No thanks and not because I have any reservations with CF I just prefer the OZ mags or the Marchesini mags. Cost is the same so its not about $$ and I can image metal anytime i want to look at material integrity. Body panels, covers, brackets etc. CF all the way. Other than that your going to get some light weight rods, valves and a new pipe. Not much tech there and all off the shelf. Its all the stuff you dont that you will get ..... on. Stock clutch and basket, stock drive train, levers, brakes, clip ons, triple etc. The bike will be waaaaaaaay over priced. If you have the $$, ability, time and space you can build a much nicer bike for less $$. I consider myself fortunate to have the tools and skill sets that keep me free from slavery.

Well all I know is the SL was released and around a year later, give or take, I have a Panigale R with damn near the same engine.

So give it time and us mere mortals should see this engine filter down to earth :)

Actually 2018 will be V4 .. I think this will be the last V2 we'll see in ducati superbikes

that read on another thread with the comparo between the 1199r the superleggera and the bsb bike made me think - if the SL had the current 1299s electronics it would have been faster and better handling than shakey's 150k bsb bike .

It puts into perspective how much could be accomplished with simply dropping weight.

Imagine it without all the street stuff - on a racetrack with 220hp

*UPDATE*

So there's a very stark warning on the front of the website quite clearly stating that everything at the moment is still kind of top secret and that if I give away this information it is a criminal offence!?! However, I am now able to access it.

I guess I can't dish out the password nor can I post pictures up here! But I figure creating a buzz online is free publicity no?

The site looks like it will update in 'chapters'. Chapter one is around carbon fibre and it's use in the project with a coming soon next to it. No pictures of the bike yet, just an exploded diagram of various parts.

With that I cannot confirm any details around the mechanics of it all but pictures hint at an extensive array of engine components.

The carbon fibre wheels look amazing, I mean literally stunning. A carbon fibre swing arm is also featured. To those who were shaking their heads at the idea of this due to structural issues you can relax. This thing looks highly engineered and well put together.

I wonder if just the carbon wheels will be available to the public or just being specially made for this bike

Ducati always pull this BS, the fact of the matter is anyone and their dog will be able to buy this bike as long as you have the funds. They will tell you it's super limited etc but at this stage i think Ducati sell more so called limited bikes than they do regular.

Don't get me wrong i love the tech and that ducati is willing to build this but just stop with the one off super limited talk that they sprout out every six months if anything it's putting me off the brand.

A criminal offense....thats pretty laughable. Exactly what offense would that be ? haha....they make me laugh. Please tell me you arent taking that seriously.

Within the next day the internet will be flooded with pics that people screen grabbed from the site.

I agree with many comments on this bike from both perspectives, factory/do it yourself.
Yes, some here are building some awesome bikes for less money. But knowledge, experience, and skill is needed that not all have. Time is required also.

I really enjoy seeing the specials that Ducati comes out with. It stokes the flames of the imagination even if we can't afford it, but I'm glad others can so Ducati will keep bringing them out.

Now a big part of owning and riding bikes for me is always giving them my personal touch. Whether it be minimal or overboard. I'm glad that there's always room left to do some mods on these factory specials.

Back in the late 90's I was enjoying an ongoing project bike of mine. Pictured if it came out in two magazines. When I saw the bike in print, I suddenly felt like the bike was done. That took the fun out of the bike and I sold it. So hopefully Ducati always leaves a little unfinished so we can keep dreaming about how best to mod our bikes whether it be a base or a SL.

I look forward to seeing this new SL.

This a silly. I have had pictures of the new wheels for months. BST has also talked openly about preliminary work on the frame, swingarm and a triple clamp. We have had the carbon swingarm In a box (pics if anyone wants them) for a long time. BST was going to do a swingarm for the 1199 a few years ago but no one showed interest enough to get the project rolling. Same with the triple. As far as any carbon engine pieces, these would all be super easy to knock off at a much lower cost. It's real simple. If the extent of your knowledge doesn't extend past slick marketing and the perceived exclusivity of getting an "owners club" t shirt, and you have disposable income, buy the factory bike put 100 miles on it and either keep it or sell it at a loss. If you want the bike you really want with the pieces you really want and you want to end up with a lighter, faster, more capable machine with real performance parts and save $$, you build. It's that simple. Ducati will never ever build a street bike that will compete with something you can build with parts unless the Corse Division has free rein and a blank check. Every factory street bike makes mfg does the same BS. They try and make it sound like your riding the bike the sponsored GP super hero is riding. Sadly many buyers leave the store believing it. There are guys on this board who can build a much better bike for a lot less money.

The statement that never before have carbon fiber wheels been featured on a street legal production bike is false.

MSTR | Motus Motorcycles

Motus Motorcycles have been selling bikes shipped straight from the factory with BST wheels for quite some time.

Well that pretty much validates it. Those wheels are the same wheels BST showed 3 months ago. The swing arm and frame are also the original BST renderings. Other than that I see the carbon sub frame from the 1199SL and a bunch of stock parts. The sub frame from CDT gives you the whole tail with interchangeable road/track light plates at less than half the cost of just the Duc sub frame with no tail. The swing arm is $4100.00. The frame is vaporware and I would not want it anyhow. Additionally they could have compared the frame to the magnesium SL frame for a weight comparison but they chose not to. Seriously you going to get 12k worth of parts (retail) and that includes the motor mods and a CDT CF body. Other than that you going to get a stock 1299 in terms of parts so were at lets say high side $28,000.00 for the bike plus 12K and were at 40K. There going to ask you for $65,000.00 at least. No thanks Ducati. I'll pass on the ripoff.

My first went to the bank manager, second to the wife and the third to a genie from a lamp.... All three said nope!

That's just the first part of the release. It's the engine that I want the details on....

Was the bank manager and your insurance agent a toss up?
