So, last night I met up with one of my mechanics in the workshop to spend some quality time with the Pani...

Shes a nice lady, but she seems to have a severe incontinence issue since she is involuntary leaking bodily fluids from a number of places in the engine. The plan was to replace both Valve Cover gaskets (that now have a new Ducati partnumber, so hopefully there is an improvement), and take off the crank case cover and redo the liquid gasket seal. Also replace the o-ring in the clutch cover.

When we took the crank case cover off, we noticed this on the plastic gear that drives the water pump:

So... Parts are on order, and she has to sit it out in the workshop for a couple of days...

Have seen a couple of motors pulled down with half that amount of work with no signs of wear all track Km .
9000 track km is not too bad but something to keep a eye on .

I had it on my 1199 S. Only a year or so old. It was actually going in to the shop to have the engine casing replaced as it had a poor finish (corrosion and bubbling etc.). When they took the casing off they found the same but a little more severe. Essentially my water pump had stopped by the time I reached the shop, no warning light or overheating at the time. But the mechanic said if the shop was a few more miles away it could of gone pop!!

Hopefully the plastic teeths that broke of the gear is too soft to do any real harm in the engine. Hopefully they just got crushed and went out with the old oil...

From what I can make out, the gear is ONLY driving the waterpump, so all that really can go wrong (if it fails completely) is that the waterpump stops, and the engine over heats... So hopefully you will have time to turn the engine off before it's too late...

I've seen this issue when someone has tried to force the cover back on and the teeth were not aligned properly... Force breaks the teeth off... The strain on these gears is minimal and we've had the motor torn open twice now and not an issue whatsoever...

Not good, I'm wondering if the pump speed needs to be slower for track only use.

uhhhh... in my opinion THIS is definately a design flaw and should be adressed by Ducati!!!
I really have no problems with loosening bolts and other quirks, but broken teeth is an absolute NO GO, racing or not!

Not sure.... I've seen plastic gear wheels in the past in industrial design. not because of cost reduction, but because of their "flexible" behaviour.

So, guess what... When removing the clutch side crank case cover yesterday, the plastic gears was broken once again. So any tips on where we can get a hold on metal gears for the water pump drive?

Hi all. I'm tearing down one of the Panigales we raced at the Barcelona 24 Hour race this year. Plastic gear completely wrecked. Not good. I'm about to open up another Panigale which has been having overheating issues to check the gear, too.
I'll post images when I put down the spanners...

has this issue been documented in "street" bikes as well ¿ ¿ ¿ thx
