Question about the new clutch

I was reading that the dry clutch on the new V4 is 1.8 pounds lighter. I’m always interested in reducing rotational mass and 1.8 pounds is a lot of rotational mass if that’s accurate.

I have questions though, maybe someone here knows the answer?

Is the 1.8 pounds weight reduction all rotational mass?

Also, is it 1.8 pounds lighter than the previous OEM STM dry clutch, or is it lighter than their non dry clutch, trying to get at how much actual rotational mass I’ll drop from the dry clutch I already have on there.

Also, I saw online the STM SBK dry clutch kit, is that as light as the one on the new bike, or possibly the same clutch as the new bike?

And finally, do any of you have any other clutch kits that may be well made and potentially lighter rotating mass that you would recommend? Maybe the Suter clutch, or EVR etc?

I believe they were comparing the weight to the 2020 V4R dry clutch when they said the new 23' V4R dry clutch was 1.8 pounds lighter.

Good questions Steven.

I'm still wet (insert pun here...) and becoming dry curious. The price has put me off before, but the new weight saving might tip me over the edge. However, I have a sneaky feeling that the lighter version from Ducati will be min 20% more expensive, so the equation probably will balance out towards staying wet...

I have the 23’ V4R with the new clutch and I had a 22’ V4S with the wet clutch. Biggest thing I’ve noticed other than the sound is that the bike gets warmer / I can watch the bars on the temp gauge get warmer a little faster than the wet clutch. I only notice it while the bike is stopped or if im stuck in any situation where I have to slip the clutch with the friction zone, but it is there. The other thing I’ve noticed is my oil in the sight glass looks brand new compared to my v4s where it would get pretty dark in the same number of miles.

Maintenance will be more as the plates are smaller diameter. Manual says check plate thickness every oil change or yearly. They also recommend replacing the housing every 15k mi

Steven taking rotational mass out of the clutch doesn't do much since it's on the other side of the primary.(and the radii of the rotational mass is probably about 70% out) If you want to take rotational mass out it's better done at the crank. That potted alternator rotor weighs a bunch and its weight is all at outer rim.

Not rotational but it’s higher up than the super duper lightweight chattering dry clutch, which affects your steering response and inertia. I always ride better after a good poo. Don’t you?
