Jesus that's mega money. That can't be the most economical way of doing it surely? I hope mine stays in one piece!

What a complete joke. low time 1199 motors are 4K or less on ebay. Swap some Ducati parts if you want to build an R spec motor or better yet use some aftermarket parts (Carrillo, JE, Del West etc and build a better motor for a lot less. Get a used motor, pull the crank, send it to Fox for the works. Get a set of Carrillo rods, decent pistons and some Ti Valve train parts from Del and assemble the motor properly. You could even do some head work if you wanted Done. Bulletproof motor and most of a spare motor if you need parts for a fraction of the quoted price. I like the bike but someone really needs to get the message to Bologna that their .... stinks and it stinks a bit more than the other guys so get over it.
MMC as I said in my pm i ended up using 2nd hand parts. Buying a 2nd hand engine is also a good option, although R engine is not that common, unlike non R engine.
Endodoc's method would also be a good option I'd like to do if I were to have time available. Alas I need the bike ready an annual event in October, so I have to make do with 2nd hand parts.

Good luck mate, hopefully ducati can come to party and help you with the cost. But, if not, look at the alternatives above.

Hopefully you find someone that knows how and has patience to put the motor together properly, especially the rods/piston/crank where stresses are particularly high and 11-12K rpm will test that! Not done right, this will happen again.

The $23-24K price doesn't make any sense. The aftermarket idea mentioned does, but good machining/assembly skills are critical.

double O has it right get a leftover for 7 k more part out the old one and keep parts as spares

Yea, Brian at Boulder Motorsports is a pro (he and his shop were in RRW in one of those shop write-ups several issues ago). Speaking with him he has access to some parts from the factory BSB team that have very low miles...crankshaft and Ti rods (inspected and re-sized)...he also mentioned using Ti 1199SL exhaust valves with press fit collets for reliability.

I think it'd be a kick-ass engine!

Don't know yet....

But, they warrantied the engine work earlier in the year...knowing it was track-only. I was warned however that DNA's using a phrase in the warranty that says something like "race use...or similar" voids warranty. I think dealer makes a "yuuuj" difference though-

Seriously your bike should be covered under warranty. Track use and Race are very different I would push back on this.

Mate I'd tell the dealer it get it done. That's warranty through and through....

You can't have Ducati giving it large about "Race bred - start to finish" and "For dedicated enthusiasts who seek the purest experience on track" then after you did exactly that and broke it they say no. That's horse sh*t. Go direct them to their own website and tell them to f*cking sort it, if not it's false advertising!

Hang on wait "Homologated for use as Ducati's platform in World Superbike, the Panigale R's Superquadro is the closest thing available to a dedicated race engine - but incredibly, offers the same generous warranty and long maintenance intervals as the rest of the bike" and again from their own site.

Definitely, so long as there has been no modification and not registered in a race series then it's covered by warranty for sure.

The catch line on the 899 was "Your Road to the Track"

Yea...that's what the dealer is discussing with Ducati at their meeting in Mexico. He's not happy about it either. It is modified, but nothing that would have led to this failure. DNA's response was:

“After the review with my colleagues It is clear that the photos and description of the motorcycle clearly indicate that this is a dedicated track day bike with race fairings, slicks, missing AIS, highly modified (Boulder Motorsports Tuned ECU, Febur etc.) and thus, outside the limits of warranty coverage. This diagnostic time and repair will be considered customer pay.”

I suggested that for that amount of $ I should probably consider legal representation but they said they're not denying it b/c of the mods...but rather simply b/c it's a track-only bike and therefore by default not covered.

Ehh...we'll see-

I think they Ducati need to clarify their position a little further. You can either track your bike and have it covered under warranty or you can't, it really is that simple.

Slicks, body work etc are purely cosmetic and nothing to do with the engine exploding and Ducati sell all of the above.

Now if they said you were not covered because you got engine work done I think that is reasonable.

Best of luck with this it's a ...... situation but your dealer needs to work with you on this.

I think you're dreaming now.. ;)

:)

I'm sure that once this gets looked at further the thing that will cause the problem with Ducati are the modifications to the ECU? I think there's a mis-understanding of DNAs statement about it being because it's a track bike as the bikes are quite clearly track toys. Whilst we know ECU, mapping, etc is done as much to improve the delivery as it is outright power, it's very much something that Ducati can argue voids the warranty. Hopefully having a good relationship with the dealer will help show that any work that has been done has been done in a professional manner and it will not come to that :(

It is modified

.......... there's ya praaaaaaaablem

Any excuse to get out of it, they will use unfortunately.......

I'm itching to stick mine on a dyno and mess with it, but until the warranty is out (March) I'm not touching it

The mods were in place earlier in the year when it was in SoCal with the...DNA knew of them...got confirmation from BMS that nothing we did contributed to the cam/cylinder damage...and covered the repair. Was always track-only...but had the stock bodywork on then...so looked less "track."

They stressed it wasn't the mods that were causing them to void it now...rather the fact it was "track-only," so MM Act wouldn't apply.

If they don't cover it...then I get to build a cool, stronger, more reliable engine (for less money) so I'm good either way!

I'm not sure if it reads that they're denying bc of it being track only instead of having mods because they clearly stated a few mods to the bike. I think that if the mods were a moot point, they wouldn't have mentioned it.

I think they're saying bc you modded + tracked your bike = void of warranty, which really sucks
