Radar Detectors

And a bit a legal stuff: In CA (Those are the laws I know) it is Illegal to have jamming devices. You can be arrested and taken to jail for that; along with your bike/car being impounded.

I hear ya. I'm not too interested in laser jamming.

My #1 priority is discretion of devices. I want an integrated system that doesn't stick out. Then it needs to operate proficiently.
I've attracted plenty of attention with my preferred pace and I roll away with a warning the majority of the time. It's been over 7 years since I've had to do a traffic school for a citation. Can't imagine ever catching a break for speeding with a detector mounted to the handlebars. A pleasant demeanor and charm can only get you so far. If you've been pulled over, a detector makes your speed seem willful while you are trying to convince the LEO that it was unintentional.

Here in Au anywhere apart from WA they will crucify you if caught with detector, not convinced they really work either. Anyone in OZ actually tried one. Sales pitch is good from WA but then it's a sales pitch :)

LEGAL SPEEDING - Products include a Helmet Mounted Radar Receiver with the flashing LED Warning and a Sport Bike Radar Mount

I had the first gen vizalert and it was pretty good if you are a visual person. The second gen looks pretty good but I prefer audio alert over LEDs. Vizalert didnt seem to stay up to date on modern detector compatibility but a close match seemed to work. Ymmv

I think the ultimate in stealth, is my iRadar (Cobra). Mounted under the headlight, then bluetoothed to my iPhone (or Android), which in turn is bluetoothed to my Sena in my helmet. Then with the phone mounted on the yoke, you have all the visual capabilities as well. It isn't the top rated detector, but it does a good enough job, and is practically invisible for less than $200.

Can it "see" behind you in that location???

Trauma, any more feedback on the iRadar?

Are there any other options for detectors that use an iPhone as the "head unit"? I want this because it would integrate well into how I ride today (headphones, iPhone, plus stealthy).

And yes, this is a reactive question. My riding may be done for the summer. F%$K!!!!

After numerous tickets I found a solution....don't stop !

I only ride old bikes on the road these days . I get more pleasure from going slower on the old bike . I actually don't think I will have another sport bike for the street .

The youthful rebel part of me likes the first comment but wilkson is older and wiser

A better solution is probably find some lonely mountain roads with only a few cows to observe where you can really cut loose, that's my preferred option. If there were a closer track that would be better yet.

On the surface, before consulting a lawyer, this appears to be a Class B Misdemeanor, 50 points off my license, 3 month suspension, 1 year probation, and up to a $1500 fine. Most of the reading I did last night seems to indicate people in similar circumstances with equally as clean driving records have been able to plea this down to "normal" speeding, court supervision, and a fine. I've got my fingers crossed. July 27th court date...

Fleeing and eluding used to be a minor charge, now it's a felony in many states so yes it's a big risk. With that said, my dad was a cop for 25 years and those tiny plates are very hard to see unless you're close

if I was going near 100 (or more) and the cop was coming the other way I would probably just run and gun, even now. Getting nailed over 100 is almost like shooting someone, at least in NC. I have many stories :)

Did he write you for reckless? What was the charge?

In NC they don't plea down over 100, anything else you can usually get it down to 1 point or 0 points. Several of mine have been dismissed - always go to court.

He wrote me for greater than 26 MPH over. From the reading I've done in 2014 IL criminalized that level of speeding.

625 ILCS 5/11-601.5

I was under 35 mph over so section A is applicable to me.

That's such bs - of all the stuff that goes on in this world, the safety naizis with their head up their ass go after those damn evil speeders.

The soccer mom on her cell phone is 10x more dangerous in the real world.

I used to outrun police on my Z1-R back when I was 20-21, had little stickers on my faring of police cars like a fighter pilot. Nowadays, I outrun with my lawyer - St Louis is unique in that the tons around here just want your money. Reduce it to a simple moving violation, maybe $100 fine, then $75 for the lawyer.

For Radar, I have a Valentines in all my cars and my K1300S - On the Pani I have a Cobra iRadar mounted under the headlight, tied to my iPhone via Bluetooth, so I hear the alarm in my Bluetooth headset (Sena), and can see the display on the iPhone - don't use this set up much, as I'm too lazy to speed much any more, a lot of work not to get caught.

As for Radars/Lidar in general, cops are typically lazy as well, so they leave it on and you can detect it way ahead. Or, they hit a guy or two in front, and you pick that one up. If you are alone and get a direct hit with instant on, of course you're cooked, but those are really rare.

I ordered the Car Adapter for the Adaptive radar detector since I use the helmet Bluetooth LED system and not the external light, I figured no reason to have all those extra wired tucked away.

I eventually ended up just cutting open the motorcycle cable mount and throwing away the pigtail. Traced out the BROWN wire to ground and the BLUE wire to +12v on the stock Adaptive harness. The reason I did this was I couldn't tame the curly cable from the automotive mount and opted to run the straight cable from the stock mount.

Under the left dash cover, you'll find this harness which is designed to be used with a GPS track unit. I verified that BLACK and RED are +12v switched and the power stays active for about 60 seconds after the ignition is turned off.

Next I spliced my Adaptive harness to the corresponding cables. For the auto harness, RED-RED and BLACK-WHITE. If you cut your stock harness, then RED-BLUE and BLACK-BROWN.

Notice I spliced in different areas of the wire- just a habit and makes it easier to insulate.

Power check worked :)

Helmet alert system installed.

If you have the newer Adaptive- then it will sync with the HARD system automatically. The site also sells the BT adapter for the Passport series. :D

Good luck!
