Endo any ideas what the cause was?

All these snapped R1 cranks that EDR posts about were 2015 and 2016 bikes that are track used.
I tend to think it's caused by sloppy downshifts over revving the engines.
Yamaha updated the R1 crank in 2017.
So knock on wood for my 2018 R1M.
But I know a few friends that have raced and track their R1's that haven't had any problems.

We were on a ride up the 405 to LA with a bunch of guys and it just let go. Sounded like large ice cubes in an industrial blender. When they pulled it apart, looking at the big end of the rod and the corresponding crank journal, the rod welded itself to the crank and twisted itself to another dimension so Im guessing there was a lubrication issue of some sort. Yamaha came up with some story about a seal being left out during assembly. Im staying out of it.

I got my fingers crossed on mine. The S1000RR just didn't fit me. The R1M makes me smile like the Pani does.

Every brand has its issues....just the R1

09-14 R1 had crank balance issues, starter motor failure
07/08 R1 had valve stem issues
01/02 R1 had gearbox issues
04/05 R1 had TPS issue.

There was an Aussie rider who's BMW 1000RR engine punched a hole in the crank case after a big end failure or some such malady under warranty so long story short Beemer said they would replace the engine with a new one.

He was not going to tell the cost of the new engine until the end of the vid but could not help himself apparently the total cost for the engine was $22K.
Thank F**k we dont build our bikes out of spare parts.......
