Riding 1299 slow on track

The whole reason I got off my very quick (to me) and sorted 1098 and onto an 899 was because I was hiding behind the extra power of the 1098 to mask my mistakes and slow corner speeds.

A racing instructor watched my riding and suggested a smaller displacement bike and plenty of instruction was needed, I took the advice and now feel really relaxed and enjoying the track much more rather than the frantic track days of old.

The instructors and racers earlier in the post do know what they are talking about.

Agree with Chaotic. I been on a 1000 for 3 years. Slooow progress. End last year I raced a 650twin for 2 months. At end of year I climbed back on the thousand. Was instantly 2 seconds faster, and ran off the track twice as well. Stick with a smaller bike if you want to go fast. Even if you down power a1299, the crank is a lot heavier and this is felt without a doubt in its agility.
I am going back to a small slow bike for the season. If I do really well, I will then go back to a 200hp bike.
Fwiw, I will occasionally use the 1000 for practice as it is fun. And I like a good scare occasionally!

As someone once said, when you go slow and feel like you're going fast, soon you will go fast and feel like you're going slow...

Practice at low speeds and nail those lines and work on your technique, then you will gradually make your way to a 1000 and won't think twice about taming the beast, because you will have your technique on lock!

The 959 is a great bike. The shock is weak, however.

If you have the means to obtain a 1299S though, I highly recommend it. At the track, ride the bike in WET mode, but change the ENGINE (throttle) setting to HIGH. The throttle setting is very important. Simply putting the bike in WET mode at the track will make it feel like a wet noodle.

Going this route gives you a bike that is far superior to the 959 that has very manageable power and a nice responsive throttle. Top shelf suspension, better t/c, wheelie control and clutchless up/down shifting.

Once you're comfortable, put it in SPORT or RACE mode every so often for that straight line grin factor that the 959 won't ever be able to provide.

^This.

The 1299 is adaptable, which is one of it's greatest qualities IMO.

I think a 1299 as a track day bike is overkill (an amazing thing) but that's just me. If some think the rear shock on the 959 crap then that can be easily fixed by modding the stock and flat link or replacing with another.

Some I feel are getting away from the OP is a learning track day rider and said he wanted to further his on track experience. He already has the 959 so much much easier to stick with what he has.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Able duc, good point from you also. And in regards to being a learning track rider - aren't we all ; )
