RIP Engine, 2018 Panigale V4

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Very sad to see this. I have 2800 miles on my 2018 V4S. I see at least one bent valve guide in the photos. Did you do any internal engines mods to her that are worth mentioning? I primarily track my bike too.

No internal engine mods,
I talked to a race mechanic and he suggested having the valve service/check engine every 1000km on the race track

Sounds about right. There’s probably a pretty good reason for the scrutiny the competition motors go through and for the attention to detail that goes into the selection of parts and assembly. Hope it all works out.

The valves on modern bikes are all two piece and friction welded together, they always fail where the stem joins the head. That's definitely a lot of race Miles. The titanium Rod's in the R1 are only good for 2500 KLMs racing. We rebuild ore stock engines every 3,000 KLMs and race engine every 1500.
Good luck with getting it all sorted

What were you doing when it let go? Straight acceleration? Up or downshift?

How was the camshaft sprocket bolts? Timing were correct and chain in good conditions? Tensioner? Have you measured valves clearances?

In one picture it looks like you have aftermarket exhaust, is that correct? Any other mod? Air filter? How was mixture on the rpm range it happened?

Took it to the dealer, they said most likely can’t do much as the bike is out of warranty.
They said Ducati has different service interval for race bike than street bikes, and will give me a copy soon.
They said they would like to open it once they have time; ie end of the summer. Mainly cause they haven’t seen a blown V4 motor.
Decided to just take the engine and tear it apart.

That is bad news...

Please post here the info on track bikes when you get it. Will probably help a lot of people.

Geez. Can we talk abt a myth here for a moment?
I had my V4 in for service today and asked my service writer abt this thread, he said “well as soon as you take it to the race track it voids the warranty” I was like even. V4 R track day weapon? He said yes. Is he accurate?
I’m figuring I’ll cross 50k miles b4 warranty is up. If I’m ripping it up and down the highway with my supercharged H2 buddy, and I follow Ducati’s 7,500/15,000 miles service, if the engine gets fcuked, I guess they can replace it under warranty

Every how many miles should I be checking valve clearances if I love revving it up to the top? It’s just a 1103cc V4

I don't think taking it to the track voids the warranty, that's some dumb ..... I took mine to the track plenty and they still did warranty work. Hell, you can wrench on the bike yourself and it is still under warranty as long as you can vaguely prove you did it correctly. There's a lot of laws protecting consumers regarding warranties, the only surefire way to void a warranty is ECU flashing. Otherwise, you only partially avoid it. For example, Ducati explained to me my FM Project exhaust voids exhaust warranty (obviously) and would only void engine warranty IF they prove whatever went wrong was because of the exhaust. Otherwise it's still covered.

Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of stories of dealers claiming the warranty is void hoping the customer wouldn't push any harder about it, just so they can make more money/avoid the paperwork.

The Ducati salesman showed me the service schedule for the “R” and the implications wrt service schedules and recommended parts replacement, specially if you were tracking/racing, and that was enough to put me off!

There’s a difference between a track day and a timed event at the track.

Wow I’ve had this happen to me on another bike. Though, I can not discuss the details I’d advise OP to lawyer up and not make anymore comments on this thread.

Side note:assuming OP stuck to the maintenance plan and other items that relate to factory recommendations

Glad nobody was hurt When this happened!!!

Is there official pricing information for these engines in a “RIP” event like this?

“race inspired” that does seem to cheapen the Panigale name. Should I be nervous shifting at redline on my V4? Every time I let the RPMs climb I’m feeling guilty after reading down this thread

I have some ninja H2 friends that have 40k and 50k miles on their tuned bikes no problem. Should I be looking to park the Ducs like art and find a bike that I can load up miles on and not worry?

I would think the V4 is less stressed or at least no more stressed than the twin with its two huge buckets going up and down at 11k. I can say with hand on heart that I absolutely thrash my bike every time I get on it, the rev limiter earns its keep yet the thing keeps going 25000 k's and counting. I am thinking this is a fault unrelated to hard use, its either misuse or a manufacturing fault.

I’m going to try to get 2 DESMO services in b4 my warranty expires. I’d be so upset if I don’t get to properly shake it down b4 they are no longer responsible. I love thrashing them hard, it’s so rewarding.
I’m guessing this isn’t that surprising.
it would have been surprising if this happened within the warranty period but you’re definitely right, this type of thing should be expected within an hour or so of the warranty expiring

I also think you have to look at things in proper context. “Hitting the redline” and whatnot then sitting at a stoplight before pulling in for that espresso and crumb cake isn’t anything close to an all out effort by a “good rider” at a competitive pace for 20 lap runs at consecutive races. Certainly not saying that a stock R can’t do that however the 2 RS motors I bought and tore down (for parts) were well worn even with the required refresh cycle. The competition “refresh” cycle I’m sure is different for a super stock application than a full SBK run but I’m guessing a lot depends on the accurate description of what the rider was really asking of the engine. All that being said, I’m guessing this was an anomaly.
