Do not change the oil every 1000 miles.

The oil beds in and will be at it's optimum after a period of time. If you change it too frequently, it's worse for the engine.

Ducati know more about the engine and the oil characteristics then anyone. Take their advice.

They believe in their own advice so much, they warranty it. Nobody else will.

This is another one of those subjects where you’re going to get a different answer from every “expert” you ask. If I looked in the sight glass and saw something I didn’t like, I wouldn’t hesitate to investigate. The material on the plug magnet is another heavily debated topic and seems to vary with magnitude and frequency as these are mass produced engines and the level of detail in the assembly and processing of installed components makes a difference. I’m pretty sure the “hand assembled” engines display different forensics. I’m also pretty sure race bikes from club racing to GP get an oil and filter after every event and I’m sure some track bikes get the same. So when is it time to change the oil? I guess when the situation warrants would be the most accurate answer as a specific timetable assumes consistent and controlled variables which do not exist. Stick a piece of tygon down the filler cap hole and pull some up and look at it under a suitable inspection glass. Takes 2 min. If you see something that looks like it shouldn’t, go from there.

I change my oil about every 3 track days. I had a fair bit of metal on the drain plug and in the drain pan with every oil change on my 1199R. With my V4R, I had very little metal with the first change and pretty much nothing with my last one. Its no true oil analysis, but it is reassuring to not see what I used to see with every oil change on the 1199.

An oil thread :D

That swarf on the magnet is probably from the gear dogs bedding in, you've got a filter and a magnet so don't worry about it. As for oil changes, no one on street that is a. still alive or b. not incarcerated needs a racebike maintenance schedule. Motul 300v needs to be changed more often than oils with detergents. If anyone is serious about oil, get an analysis done at each change but the reality is that most bike nuts change their oil far more often than necessary.

As a footnote Kev, I wouldnt worry about oil more than I would worry about skin

We make it to my favorite shell gas station 73 miles away in abt 25 minutes. 5 minutes sooner than our sheriff friend in the helicopter

I’m getting harder tyres this time

This thread obviously triggered me so now not only am I paralyzed in fear abt leaving my house even with a mask, but now I’m losing sleep abt potential catastrophic failure inside my V4.

At this point I’m planning to renew oil every 1,000 miles since it looks toast. Am I just wasting my time cause oil really does stay good for 7,000 miles like my service writer insists?
I do ride the bike hard and I ride it a lot.

The Motul DOT 5.1 held up decently over 1,000 miles but it’s definitely looking a little toasty and will be renewed with RBF660 and plan to refresh both brakes and clutch action fluids every 1k miles

How abt DESMO services? Ducati claims 15,000 miles but I’m thinking 7,500 miles for the full service. I’ve been riding with the fast group.

I guess you could tell me to park the Duc and display it like the piece of art it is and go out and buy a jap bike. But I love riding my Duc, I’d rather spend the money to have a spare V4 engine sitting on the bench for when the “opportunity arises” to swap the engine. And that sounds like the only true solution to overcome my heart stopping fear of nuking my engine
Do you guys have any recommendations for V4 specific engine stands or do I have to go bug the service center at my dealership?
Why do you feel the need to hijack every thread with your squid content? Busa's H2s and t-shirts in a thread about a race bike. SMDH
