So I bought 2012 Panigale from a private seller yesterday, rode it around checked it out seemed fine. I drove it home (1.5 hours away) I gas up at a Shell with the V Nitro 91 ........ (probably about half the tank) I get in to the city and start smelling that oil burning smell, then I garage it and smoke was coming out of the right exhaust pipe. Took it this morning to work no problem then noticed slightly heavier smoking from the right pipe along with the upper portion of the exhaust.... Took it to work out had a little trouble starting but then down the rode it starts chunking and dies.... i try for 10 minutes to start it again finally get it running with decent amount of smoke again coming from the exhaust and backfiring like you wouldn't believe. I walked it the rest of the way and here we are... also it only has 1700 miles along with no warnings on the display. Seller is honest guy (to my knowledge) and he said either bad gas or sparks. If this is likely not the case please let me know... cause as of right now I am currently in .... my pants freak out mode.

Did you buy the bike without a pre-purchase inspection from a dealer/technician?

smoke from the exhaust = oil in the cylinder, busted seal is my guess.

Ouch! sorry bro

Wouldn't it have been smoking when I originally inspected it? or is it possible I somehow did that in the 100 miles I put on it? also is that an expensive fix or?????????

How many miles? I think most Panigale's smoke early. Beat the .... out of for a few hundred miles and see where you stand.

My 2013 smoked for a while but eventually went away.

Get a compression check and an oil pressure check at the dealer

That will tell you if there is something serious going on..

Speedy

I live 5 hours away from nearest dealer :(

If blue smoke is only coming from one exhaust, then it sounds like you are burning oil.

If its from both and not so blue, but more white and and clears after you give it a good rev then its normal in the early miles. I reckon mine smoked for about 2000 km before it stopped.

Maybe time to put it on a trailer and drive to the dealer for that compression test.

I truly appreciate all the feedback, this really is a ...... spot I'm in but how could it seem to run fine after 10 minutes or so of riding and then do all this....? Is it likely the guy knew something was wrong and sold it anyway or just bad luck on my part or could I have personally ...... it up in 100 miles?

The exhaust isn't separated right and left. Both the vertical and horizontal pipes meet just before the exhaust servo then branch off right and left. Its odd that its only one can smoking. For how low that mileage is for a 2012, I'm thinking the bike sat forever. I doubt the guy really flogged the .... out of it. I'd be more suspicious there was just debris in one of the cans. What color is the smoke? Does it have an odd smell? The fact that it happened 10 min into a ride suggests that its heat related.

When you say there's smoke coming from the upper portion, what part in particular? The guy didn't wipe anything down with WD40 did he? I wiped down my Akrapovic system and it smoked pretty bad as soon as I started it, but it went away within a few few of being warm.

Check your oil level? Mine burns a lot of oil running 10w40 shell ultra, with blue smoke occasionally on startup, but it's not as bad now I'm running 15w50.

In just 100 miles, you might be surprised to find the oil level has dropped from the upper to the lower mark!

Ya it seems like it had sat for a while. But it's a white color with a smell of I'm pretty sure burning oil. But it also had trouble starting after I was leaving the gym so it had sat for a a little over an hour and that's when .... got real bad. But for the upper smoke I just mean further up the exhaust pipe towards where it connects. But as far as wd40 I have no idea

Thanks I'll definitely look into it but there isn't any warning light or anything

It could be two typical issues happening at the same time since it is a low mileage bike.
1. you could still be having the typical oil burning of before they get broken in. It takes a while for some of these bikes. That would explain the smoking.
2. The hard start could be the vapor canister is still installed. you can search the forum for symptoms and removal of the canister.

Could there be too much oil in the bike ? did anyone add oil? some people don't realize the oil levels measured with the bike upright level . occasionally new owners add oil with the bike on the side stand .

Where do you live?

I find it hard to believe that there are ZERO Ducati technicians in your town. Instead of depending on "guesses" based on your description, why not have it looked by a professional, Something, I might add, you should have done as soon as you picked the bike up (if not before purchase...)

I live in no where Kansas, but ya I'm definitely going to check the oil when I get a chance but I called a Ducati dealer and mentioned those typical 2 reasons which helped relieve a little stress, he also said the backfiring would be normal if I continued to attempt to start it is as much I did. However the only other concern is that it died after I got a couple blocks away?
