I think historically, Anthropomorphizing objects of war and protection and ships were given female names as a source of a sense of security and comfort. Seamen would equate the ship with the comfort and love of the women waiting for them at home in hopes of making it home in many cases! Pilots would name their planes and hope she would get them home safely in war times.
It has been a natural progression, then, for the trend to be transferred to vehicles we place our trust and lives in....I mean, I'm not running around the house giving names to the tables and chairs and appliances, but I have been known to call my chopper the litte C*nt when she doesn't kick over!!
The naming is not meant to feminize or emasculate, but rather convey a sense of relationship and trust. I am sure women do the same as men.
My wife has named her CBR600RR "Kimi".
