Speeding tickets

Do tell more Frosty.....

It was quite sad actually. Cherry picked on a highway, I was following 2 cruisers. All 3 of us got pulled over, and the cop said to the 2 cruisers, "Okay you 2 are free to go." WTF? I guess if you're riding a red sport bike you're automatically guilty. If you get caught going 40km/h over the speed limit you get impounded for 7 days, pretty stupid rule as your basic rights are violated on the side of the road. You cannot dispute the impound.

That being said a few weeks ago myself and 2 friends went riding early on a Saturday morning, we go early to avoid cops and traffic. So around 8am, back roads, we pass a ghost SUV cop traveling the opposite direction at 130 in a 60 zone. The guy leading, and myself second, take off. We hit the highway, and just gun it, we're going 240+ at this point. About a kilometre up the road we turn down this little side street. The last guy in the group was playing catch up. He rolls in 30 seconds later, with the cop on his tail.

He says "Why the .... are you guys going so fast?????" "Look behind you ......" He didn't even know the cop had been following him and that he was leading the cop straight to us.

So the cop gives us an earful, asks us WTF we were doing. Friend says "We're just out having some fun." Then I chime in, "I think a little too much fun." So more lectures, then says he's going to run all of our records and wants to know what he's going to find. "Just speeding tickets from 3-4 years ago." So cop goes and sits in his SUV for 15 minutes, during that time more cops show up. So now we think we're getting impounded for sure. Cop comes back and says, "I looked you guys up, you were right, speeding tickets few years prior. So we're going to be handing out some pretty big speeding tickets today, we should be impounding your bikes" blah blah blah. He writes out the tickets, we all got $196 tickets! That's one of the lowest where we are, we were all STUNNED. We should have ended up in jail. The cop didn't even say anything about us trying to run from him. We got off seriously lucky that day, horseshoe up our ..... for sure.

OMG, you're right, from what you have said of CA, insane lucky!

Just got my first in 10 years, two weekends ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 61 in a 45, so it could have been FAR worse. I was really just taking it easy, but the park ranger was set up right at corner exit. He was a nice guy, told me he'd have just given me a warning since I pulled right over and was in full leathers, but they were under orders not to due to motorcycle crashes the past few weeks. Lame having a specific order for bikes, but not his call so I didn't run my mouth.

The upside: it's a federal citation. $100 and done, no reporting to state or insurance...just pay the speed tax.

Definitely worth knowing the rules in your state. Here in NC you're pretty much safe as long as you aren't in a residential or downtown area and it's not NC Highway Patrol. They are awful when it comes to bikes. Cherry picking, following at night with no headlights, and stops for HOV lane use even though it's legal are all par for the course.

I live in the Houston area and I have a few strict (well, sort of strict) rules...

> When in town, run within a few mph of traffic around me. Why waste a ticket on city driving.

> When in the country, run fast when visibility is good for 1/4 mile or more ahead

> Only run hard with radar detector (on all three bikes all the time).

> When running curves hard, slow down if another vehicle coming the other way in the curve

> When passing, try not to piss off the driver I am passing - it could be an off duty cop with a cell phone

> Riding fast might get me a ticket, but riding stupid and fast will piss people off. Cops are usually reasonable if you are fast but not stupid.

> Only ride with one or two (for me one) people who you trust and who you don't have anything to prove to.

There are plenty of open roads in Texas with good visibility and light traffic when you get out of town. Save the speeding for those roads.

I'm not saying I have never broken those rules - we all do stupid stuff or we wouldn't be riding a 195 hp superbike. But keep the odds in your favor by using your head.

Here you pretty much pay a lawyer to get it reduced to a non-moving violation, or dismissed. I haven't pushed it much beyond 25 over, but I have yet to have points on my license, and I get 1 tickets a year average - had 3 already this year, none on the Pani. :D

you only get out of tickets because the police choose to come after me instead....f'ing profiling....:D

In Spain it depends on the time of the year. Come the end of each quarter the plod are out in full handing out tickets like no ones business. If they do not meet their quota they lose their "bonus".

Only 2 tickets in my lifetime though. Not bad I reckon!

Arsenal fans should get tickets just for being that...:D

I'm soooo hurt at the comment.........

Just kidding ...Arsenal are actually my fav premier league team..But they frustrate me too.... :(

I am surprised tickets are an issue in Spain.. I thought Euro cops were more laid back..They seemed that way in Italy anyway...

Spanish cops can vary. Depends whether they are on their period or not. The main reason is because Spain has no money so they have to get it from somewhere! I have a mate who sorts my tickets out now anyway. Plus I have a UK license so they cannot put points on it because Tenerife is not technically part of the EU.

As for Arsenal frustration does not even come close.......:(

Arsenal? Please. Wait until Barcelona's new lineup comes your way! :)

Any team built around Messi will be good..... La Liga title next year perhaps?? Champions league winners?? They seem to underachieve though.. But with Mourinho gone they should at least win La Liga... maybe:confused:

We'll see.. Can't wait for the cup too...should be a good year!

Kinda derailed this thread.

So what was the best let off anyone has had.

Mine, I was doing 110mph in 30mph on an RGV 250 when I was a kid. Only got let off because the bike cop had been trained in advanced motorcycling for the Sussex police force by my dad. He knew that If my dad found out I would get a right slap.
