Stalling in first with clutch held in

Has anyone experienced this. Bike stalls silently as if you hit the kill switch when either rolling slowly or coming to stop with the clutch held in fully in first gear. Mainly when the bike is hot. Both my brother and I experienced this in stop and go traffic on our 22’ and 23’ panigale V4S. Wasn’t sure if there was a fix or this was a high temp thing / vapor lock/ charcoal canister related.

Notice it happening when it’s hot out or cold? Stock bikes?

I’ve had this happen a couple times w my stock 22 PV4S. First time it happened when very cold (below 39°F/2°C). The other when it was pouring rain. Never happens when it’s warmer.

My theory is that the O2 sensor is not getting hot enough and causing fueling issues. At cold temps, usually no vapor lock but then again it could cause some sort of condensation problem with the big temp discrepancies from the cold atmosphere ☃️to the inferno 🔥 between your legs.

@DeussenEngines might have some insights

I think that higher octane fuel can also cause this issue.

i.e. if 95 is recommended don’t use 98.

Run a tank of whatever octane is recommended in the manual and see if it is better.

For us it only happened when things got hot in stop and go traffic. Bikes are both completely stock. One being a 2022 and the other a 2023.

Running the highest octane we have in our area and the minimum for the bike (91)

My 2023 has started doing this with less than 200 miles on it initially. Hot weather, stuck in slow traffic situation. Dealer has been able to duplicate the problem but it's not throwing any codes. Waiting for Ducati to respond on the problem.

I believe it’s normal and just due to the bikes not being designed with the charcoal canister in mind. My theory is that ,under the right circumstances, the vapor build up due to the heat of the bike cannot vent quickly enough through the charcoal canister and this causes vapor lock and the bike stalling. Removing the canister from what I’ve seen gets rid of it. My brothers 23’ V4S did the same thing as mine and I’m going to assume the new v4r I have coming will be the same as well.

Your brother removed his and hasn't experienced it any longer? It's surprising to me that the engineers have any oversight on this if true. What's the suspected warranty issues that accompany this? Thanks for all your feedback!

We never removed either because it only ever happened being stuck in traffic once or twice and we only would ride in the canyons. Everyone we spoke to who removed it completely got rid of the issue though.

Ducati has suggested replacing front and rear bank coils on my bike. Awaiting parts and another test ride.

You fixed it?
I had this problem on my 1199, it was a short in the clutch cables, that was even messing with the QS, the computer was constantly thinking that the clutch was pressed. When I came to a stop with clutch in, when hot, the idle will drop to the point of shutting off the engine in most of the cases. After correcting the cable short, the idle automatically increases when stopping in the same way.

So checking the clutch lever wires could help.

How frequently did your bike stall?

Three times within an hour during the initial event, then I sent the bike to the dealership. They were able to duplicate it right away. The bike only had 200 miles on it and as much as I love it, truly isn't acceptable to me.

No, the dealership is awaiting parts at Ducati's suggestion. I'm basically on the sidelines and allowing this to play out. I will keep this in my pocket to mention if the coils don't reslove the issue.

Might consider lemon law if it’s out of service for more than 90 days or it happens 4 times in 2 years (warranty period).

Got my bike back today. They changed all the coils and advanced the timing from 4.611 to 4.062 The dealer rode the bike multiple times and couldn't duplicate the stalling anymore. I have 225 miles prior to the 625 mile service. Appreciate everyone's feedback here.

How did they change the timing?
