Seems like the price of a 2014 Superlegerra is coming down, and an 2015 1199R as well. Still a significant amount between the two, but if you were going to get one as a track bike, which would you choose. Is there a benefit from the R's inertial platform electronics? I would choose a 1299 as my road bike.
I am not a racer. I like the idea of having a limited edition Superlegerra, but the R is just as good looking, and the track speed is dependent on me, not the bike anyway. Rideability is a plus.
Maybe it would be good to have the R, so you could say you would be faster if only you had the Superlegerra:)
Hope to hear from those with more experience than I. I just live to ride, not ride to live, so have at it.
Still very happy with my 1199s, off to the track this Friday.:D:D

You will be as quick as either Panigale but the SL is just that little more special .
If the price difference is not a thing then get the Superlegerra .

folks will have different comments about it but really comes down to, if you have the money, buy it.

Folks will say:
1. Why buy R or SL? Buy the lessor like 899/959/1199/1299 and turn it into track bike
2. Buy R. Don't need SL. More expensive to repair.
3. Buy SL. Its made for the track.

If I had no financial barriers at all and having ridden both. I would hands down without a doubt buy an SL.. But I must say the new R is a sexy, psychotic, ....ographic beast and I'd gladly lick it just the same.

In my personal experience, I would and I did buy the R. Yes the SL is a special machine but I felt I could ride the R day to day and not worry about it as much. I like the auto blip downshift and personally I like the look of the R more. If money wasn't an issue I'd have the SL, riding as much as I do, I went with the R

As long as you take it to the track you can buy any Superbike you want! Just don't let it die a slow death riding to Starbucks in city traffic!!!

40-60k is a lot of money to spend on something that you admit will do nothing for your performance on track but is considerably better at lightening your wallet should anything go wrong.

That said, get whichever you like more. Clearly this isn't a decision where reason applies. Whatever you do though if it's the SL make sure it's actually insured as a SL and not a regular Panigale.

I've already taken my 2015 R on track and in the back of my mind was always "Don't drop it, don't drop it, don't drop it!!" With the SL it would be a whole lot worse I'm sure...... Novice group?

Personally, I have pretty much the same engine as the SL and, for me at least, that's where the magic happens. It is epic, truly stunning.

As for unltra lightweight components? Well I'm only pushing 75 kg so I'm kind of subsidised against the fat guy with the SL :D But like you, I'm not good/fast enough to appreciate nor exploit that advantage.

It's a head scratcher for sure. I am over the moon with my R though, it's the Panigale I wanted from the very start, even just to look at, I love everything about it and I don't feel guilty about taking it out and giving it a good thrash, plus you will have some change in your pocket :)

But.............. as the gentleman already said, the SL is just that little bit more special ;)

Very nicely said. Actually that's the main problem with the SL: "don't crash, don't crash please....". OEM SL specific spare parts are extremely expensive! With the money for the farings alone you can buy another used Panigale!

Riding: The 2015 R is the track monster. For the additional money you would have to spend for an SL you can convert an R into a space rocket (if you don't count the worktime spending on it).

For the one's that want to build a super lightweight Panigale, the SL is a very good starting point.

Some great opinions. I think just buy what makes you happy. The SL or the R.
Both are fantastic, one is a little more exclusive than the other but either way they're all great bikes.

Very True . This why this got the boot as it was not a enjoyable street bike and too expensive to crash at the track so my experience wasn't as good as it should be .

I would bet a paycheck you would run the exact same lap times on either, and also the same lap times on a 1299, 1299S, ZX10, R1, etc.

Modern liter bikes are way more capable than any of us. Just get whichever one you like the best and want more; at the end of the day it won't matter. Don't choose either of them under the impression that you will be faster on it, the bike isn't the limiting factor, the rider is.

So true. As for the OP, if money no object then I would buy the SL. But then I could not thrash it at the track and risk crashing. Even with my 2012 1199S, I have sometimes got the red mist chasing down some guy and almost lost it. Be worse with a SL I reckon.

hell...i'll buy two and one for living room.

I'd buy the SL get an autoblipper for it. Then buy a 1299 Base and beat the piss out of that one on the track.

I was in this predicament a few months back and I was offered a new SL at a really good price.

I ended up going with the R for a number of reason, the price differential between the SL and R was significant even with the deal I was offered(if money was not an object I would have gone with the SL).

I would have stripped a lot of the parts from the SL to turn it into a track machine hence losing some of the exclusivity of it such as the beautiful carbon bodywork.

If I crashed the wheels and swingarm etc are not easily replaceable.

The new R is 80% of the SL and having only ridden it twice it's a real handful and I could probably do with less power.

Either bike is great but the SL is a really pretty special

get the R today for tomorrow the SL price will depreciate even more, but if u can even consider the SL then why not just buy both?

Stop bullshitting, just crash it. Its fun in small doses. They more expensive, the better..
