Apex failure is almost always the result of detonation/pre-ignition (especially under boost) and again these problems have largely been solved with more knowledgeable tuners and water injection. My engine has been rock solid for six years of hard use - rotaries can be reliable, it's all in the tuning, and, unlike Porsche, a new motor build isn't $15,000+, it's more like $5000, the engines are dead simple.

The FD RX-7 comes about as close to the "bike on 4 wheels" concept as you can get without going to something like an Atom or Elise

BMW is now talking about running water injection in the M4

My tuner shop has done many FD's and a few FC's. They are more sensitive to detonation than the typical inline which makes it risky to tune to the bitter edge.

I use methanol injection in my four banger. Water injection works well but Methanol effectively turns pump gas into race gas only a hell of lot cheaper. Only one location for E85 locally so that wasn't an alternative. I'm surprised that water injection isn't standard or at least a factory option for all turbo diesels. I suppose the added complexity is just one more thing to fail.

I put a water cooled turbo on a 1982 RX7 31 years ago. It was a weekend car that I kept for nine years, which shatters the record of whatever car I have owned the second longest. I loved that car and at the time never came across a car on the street that could outrun me. I had just quit road racing motorcycles and needed something else to piss away my money on (I did have a Honda CB1100F street bike at the time).

He is probably one of the more eloquent and informative motoring journalists (with perhaps a bit of a Porsche bias) and the man can drive a car, no doubt about that. It will be interesting to see how he gets on with the bike.

I hope he does a review on the new GT3RS. I really really want one. I just dont know if its worth the extra $$$ over the standard GT3. At least the hold values better than the Turbo and Turbo S, even if they dont have the torque.
