Hi,

I'm trying to work out the difference between the 1299R and the 1199SL, i know the 1299r does not some with some of the fancy components such as the carbon bodywork and mag wheels but ultimately i think they are going to be very close with the 1299R having an almost identical engine but with the whole bike weighing 15lbs more.

Does anyone have any insight.

Cheers

SL frame is 5500
It is not a true SL motor
SL comes with mag wheels
SL comes with carbon fairings and subframe
Titanium all around
The brake master cylinder is different as well

So add just a few of those up you can find a used SL sell what u don't need a a get to a new R price

Yes, the 14R and the 2015R will be different. Electronics, weight. and the engine will be different. It does have some components derived from the SL.

I'm trying to work out if i should buy an SL or the New R or just keep my existing bike (13 1199R)

Whether a street or track bike the SL is the obvious choice. Everything thats on the PaniR and more. You will spend that much buying the 15r and upgrading it anyways.

EDIT: Unless your a seriously almost pro rider you wont outride the SL. Ill take the body work and numbered clamp from it lol

Ha I won't outride either bike but that does not stop me lusting after them.

I'm trying to work out how close the new model is to the SL to make an educated buying decision and if it's a big improvement from the current model

True. I'd buy the SL and not care about outriding it. But the PaniR is by Ducati's own description leaps and bounds superior to the previous R's. You would just have to decide would you put FGRT's on the R knowing thats beyond the SL's forks. And would you CF the whole monocoque and subframe? If not then the R is perfect for you. If you want a step above the R the SL is the best choice and no upgrades required. Just my 2 cents.

Good points and no I would not carbon fibre the bodywork or subframe as it will go down at some stage.

I may change the forks and wheels but that would be it.

I would say the 15' R would be right for it then. With better internals and wheels you'd still be 20-23k cheaper than the SL. Maybe find some SL Forks and Shock.

Also could save yourself a huge hassle and call Jarel about the forks.

Hey, I know you!

Just get the 899 and throw a bunch of money at it :D

Not saying what you should do, but I've got a 2013 R - time for the 2015 R - thank you ! :D

So do I that's the problem I'm trying to work out how close the 2015 R is to the SL.

The reviews for the 1299 are phenomenal and you get that low down Ducati torque that was lacking with the 1199.

It's decision time

Yea...I guess it could be tuff to decide that, but not for me....I have been down the exotic road with Ducati (D16RR) and while I can appreciate every detail of the ownership/riding experience, and wouldn't deny anyone's choice for wanting the SL, if it's street riding you'll be doing with it (which is all I do) I find the basic (if you can call an R basic) R model perfect for me....but that's me :)

If cost is not an issue, then "why not" - if track days are your style, then " why not"....it's the most serious Ducati you can get, even with the 1299 & 1199r knocking on its door, ducati has made the SL just different enough to keep it desirable (mostly weight now, and a really free spinning motor, although the new R is getting pretty close with the engine)..if however you will put miles on it, (usually this means street riding) it might be wise to find a non registered SL so you can fully exploit the warranty side of things

I got "lucky" in a way, in that after taking a rest from ducati ownership (1yr on a zx6 after 4 seasons & 23,000 miles on the d16rr) the 2013R pulled me back, so when the SL was released my R was just too new for me to step to the SL, so in a way the 2013R saved me over 30 grand - and now, with Ducati giving us more of what we ask for, I find no need to look back (SL)...."I'll take that 2015, thank you" !

Good luck with your choice, for this decision let your heart guide you as well :D
