This bike is huge fun but it sucks the gas like nothing else I've ridden. I'm used to get about 140 miles on my old R1 and 120 on the ZX-10 before the light came on, but I'm consistently about 85 miles with this thing  I guess you don't ride where isn't a gas pump too far away. Wonder if it can be leaned out a bit with tuning to save some gas (not that I really care, just seems thirsty)

Two big coffee cans going up and down lol. My 1299s gets 103 miles before the light comes on with agressive canyon carving consistantly. On the freeway/highway i get 120 miles before the light comes on.

I'm right there with scrapper. It's funny how fuel consumption ranges from one bike to the next. By 85 seems low. Unless I'm at the track.
I was actually expecting it be much worse than what it is.

unless you want to lunch your motor, do not lean it out. leaning out the mixture also raises exhaust gas temps - meaning it will be even hotter under the seat.

time for the OP to go trade in for an R1.

Where I live I gave keep an eye trip meter sometimes it means fueling after about 1 hr, but dare not go over 85 miles, found out the hard way in Jan when we had freak hot spell in MT fuel light + 15 miles to empty.

I was expecting my mileage to be abysmal and far worse than my BMW S1000RR, but I am actually getting about 5-10 miles more out of a tank from the 1299 than the BMW.... HOWEVER, when I push it, the 1299 drinks gas, like a dipsomaniac...

Nope - like I said before, R1 is the better track bike, 1299 is the better street bike

I think that's it, I'm on the throttle hard most of the time, not cruising. When you go past a certain throttle position no doubt it goes rich to mitigate detonation, but hopefully not as rich as your dyno showed - that was insane rich

I think the problem is the humidity here in NC. I average 100 mi per tank. I have never gone less than 93 on a tank or more than 110.

I have noticed folks in other states tend to get a bit better mileage than us, so I blame the humidity.

Since I am taking her with me to NY for the next week. It will be interesting to see how many miles I get per tank up there where there is next to no humidity in the Catskills.

That's an oversimplification. The manufacturers always tune these bikes, jet-skis, whatever conservatively rich because they don't want warranty claims. Little question there is room to lean it out a bit, which if anything helps power production. Shilling's dyno showed mid 10s AFR (granted that run was not conducted properly), I would expect it should be closer to mid 12s wide open - and it would be perfectly fine

is that right? so how do they pass EPA/Euro 3 emissions regulations? ummm....they run lean spots on the map.

very rich points on the map are often the result of the lack of ram air effect on a dyno. But hey, lean that baby out and improve your fuel economy. What do I know, anyways?

I've been getting 100-120 miles per tank when the light comes on and it generally only takes 3.5 gal to fill up so should be able to go 140 miles no problem cruising the Idaho back roads at high speeds. I've been showing 40 mpg running the back roads, 30 mpg around town, and 25mpg on track.

Both Ducati's I've owned were thirsty but the thirstiest was the Diavel. I could limp into a gas station at 125 miles but usually had the light come on between 90 and 95. You don't don't hint it's a big deal until you have to stop and hold up a group or have to refuel daily when you choose to commute for a little sunshine
