I think very simply, we have a fellow accustomed to riding UJMs, decided to buy a base 1299 by stretching the budget a bit, and can't quite wrap his head around how to ride a performance V-twin. Instead of adapting to the machine, it's "alright for the street but could never be a contender in actual racing/track use"...an excuse for not understanding how to milk the goods out a Ducati - they have it in spades but do not give it up easily to the uninitiated or the dilettantes.
For the record, I get between 70-ish to 110 miles before the fuel light comes on. It depends greatly on how I've been riding. Overall average fuel economy as recorded by the bike is 31mpg. With how intense and physical it is to really flog a Panigale, taking a break every 80-100 miles is good sense. If I want range, I take the Multistrada, and if I REALLY cared about range, I'd have bought a damned R1200GS Adventure w/8 gallon fuel tank. And maybe by leaning out the fuel map, I could stretch the range 10~15%....
