Truth about tyres and traction control

Hi ChamMTB and Veck
Do any of you use or have a hight meassure tool ala the one Kyle Racing have ?

I spoke to Dan just before he had the tool ready. Its on my list of things to purchase. The Ohlins spec sheet I got uses the Ducati tool and they have shock length listed as well in case you dont have the tool or are using aftermarket rearsets that dont fit the Ducati tool.

Just got back from 2 days at the track. Gearing change was a big help, it pulls better from lower RPM and it feels like I'm staying out of parts of the throttle map that are twitchy.

Was that in 195Hi or Lo?

Veck: What length on the shock did you end up with - I think that mine is 308 mm at the moment.

The link rod to the swingarm is dialed in to min lenght - in order to lower the rear a bit.

Kyle tool and a Sato ajustable rod seems to be a must ;-)

I'm at 306MM eye to eye on the rear shock and I'm running the chain adjuster dialed back for a bit more swing arm length.

This was also my first time with the DDA installed and got some decent data from it. It was nice to see where TC was kicking in and how much. I wish there was a way to export the data so I could overlay it on my video.

195Lo. I still find 195Hi too glitchy mid corner for my tastes.

I read that the R has smoother fueling and that people found the RbW to be better. I forgot which mag I read it in, anyway I wonder if that's something that can be applied to the non-R versions.

Interestingly I've got about 10mm more showing on the forks and raised the rear about 3mm. It's feeling much better than before but I need some more time on it. Only got about 3 sessions on this setup.
I need to the Kyle tool for sure though.

One thing to consider, the measurements are different between the S and base. When I was talking to Dan Kyle he said that there was a 7mm difference in the front forks between the two.

veck - which was which? I have the base and am following this thread intently.

Also, I'm considering the Bitubo XXF61 shock. It supposedly has an adjustment range to 10mm SHORTER than the OEM shock, ostensibly to address this very problem of too much rear ride height. That, and it has separate high- and low- speed compression damping, which I prefer.

When Dan is talking about 7mm he must be referring to the diameter no? 43mm Ohlins vs 50mm Marzocchi...

He was talking about the length. When you set the front fork ride height using the info from Ohlins they have you measure from the bottom of the triple clamp to the dust seal if I remember it correctly(at work so I dont have it in front of me).

I'll have to look at the sheet again when I get home. I've looked at the Bitubo stuff before but when I checked around on who could service the components and found zero people around me that would work on them. Thats a huge problem for me given the amount of use my bikes get.

The TTX rear shock has plenty of adjustment. I could shorten the length by at least another 5mm from where I have it sitting now.

I pulled my notes from my last conversation with Dan. The front height he gave me for the S Model was 217mm. Measured from the bottom of the lower triple clamp to the gap between the fork seal and the tube.

I wrote down that the S and the base were different heights. I thought it was 7mm but I did not write down the exact length. Best bet for the base is to call Dan. He's got a ton of information about the 1199.

Thanks a bunch veck. I did the same thing earlier this week and there isn't anybody I can even send a Bitubo too right now for a rebuild. Unfortunate, because I've been watching their stuff for a couple of years and it does very well in SBK Supersport and Superstock, but without rebuild options it's not going to be viable.

Do you ever make it down to Jennings GP? That's my home track and I'd love to compare setup notes, not to mention follow around another Pani at the track.

Ya its a shame about Bitubo. They have some really interesting stuff but if you cant get it rebuilt at least semi-locally it just does not make sense to me.

Not really a Jennings fan. The bikes I was riding at the time did not have TC and I just could not get much grip at the rear.

I'm normally at Roebling Road most times. If you ever want to do a track day up there I've got a great group that I go with. Average group size on track is 10-12 people. Lots of space to really focus on improving skills and working on bike setup. Plus you have to love bombing down that front straight, 170mph going into the braking zone for T1... tons of fun.

I've lived in FL and NC for the last 14 years and have yet to do Roebling. Raced at Road ATL, VIR and Little Talledega in WERA eons ago but never made it to Roebling. Was thinking about doing a Nate Kern day there as I've heard good things about his days and followed him around Daytona when he had the first S1000RR in the USA back in 2009.

Speaking of bombing, you should plan on coming down for the Team Hammer day at Daytona in October. I've done it a few times and can't wait to see how the 1199 compares to my previous MV F4 and Crossplane R1 on the high banks.

Sorry for the threadjack - does anyone have any practical experience running on the street with Dunlop Q2s (190/55 rear) and if so what is your experience with the TC?

Not Q2's, but I stuck some S20's on mine for the off-season with a 195/55 (oops, 190/55) rear and am going to wear out a second rear S20 before going back to more Pirellis or something new later this season. Have gone through a bunch of Q2's on my other bikes though, in the same size. New tires side by side, the S20 has a steeper profile in the rear than the Q2, and a new S20 was 5mm taller in the center than the worn 200/55 Pirelli it replaced. So not enormously out of range. The front's a mite taller than the stock Pirelli though, and the TC is definitely affected. To ballpark it, I'd put it at about 1.5-2 TC settings more intrusive on new tires, meaning you notice the TC kicking in on level 3 with the 190/55 about like it would on level 4-5 with the stock tires. As the rear wears (and shrinks) it gets noticeably more active. Quite useable on the street though, and you can still fire it off corners hard enough to get the rear to spin up just a little before the TC headmistress steps in to call a halt to all the fun...

With the 190/55 rear I run my TC now on 1 in race mode and 3 in sport mode. Never could see much point in anything above 3 or maybe 4 for street use in the dry, even with the stock Pirelli's, so not a lot different. As the rear wears I'll back it down to 2 for sport mode. If I were really wanting to improve function on 190's think some of the custom sensor rings people are playing with would likely be a good solution. I think that might even be a good idea with the stock tires, since the OEM settings range is largely too intrusive so you lose half of it.

If you come to one of Nate's days you will see me. I'm at almost every single one of them. Its a good deal for the amount of track time you get. I just did the 2 day event there last week.

Going back for 2 more days next month, he's doing his big BMW thing there next month but any brand of bike is welcome. They have one of the WSBK engineers coming over to attend. He was there last year and was great to talk to, learned a bunch.
