V4R Dead Battery

@Keith197 - Plastic Bike made the bodywork. I am waiting for it to arrive. Apparently, as a favor, they made a special set in carbon for me so this will be the first set. I will post pics when I have it in a week. Looks promising!

I used a Battery Tender charger but maybe I can try a different charger to see if I have any better luck.

Be very careful trying to recover a lithium battery. If I were you I wouldn't bother with the risk of fire.

But, if you do please keep the battery away from anything that could catch fire or harm anyone. You can use a 'dumb' charger and apply current for short time increments and see if you gain voltage. In the end a lithium battery once damaged can not really be recovered. It'll lose capacity.

Put new battery in.

@airjawed, agreed. Dealer has it now but it's funny some say it can be recovered, some say replace...

I should have the new one by next Tuesday.

It can be recovered, but I would advise to replace.
A lithium battery suffers in capacity when drained too much (capacity less than 60%), when exposed to high temperatures and when recharged at high voltage.

If you recover the battery, it will be weaker and needing replacement after some time. So you could use it, but replacing it will happen...

Actually, a lithium battery is very fragile. If it wouldn't be so light, it would be just plain stupid to use such a battery :D

I need to replace my OEM on my V4R , which aftermarket battery can anyone recommend ? Best performance and similar size to OEM . Thank you

I got the Aliant Lithium Motorcycle Battery YLP12 from motorcycleraceparts.co.uk
Slightly larger capacity, so it takes longer to drain, and still weighs nothing. Check with them it fits the V4R, as I'm 90% that was the model.

exactly this Aliant dies in my bros 1199r. i opened it and found that it was killed by its own bms.

the oem batt in the v4r has not survived the run in phase.
we went to a unibat eXtra.

but..whatever you choose, get the biggest that fits in.(+ lifetime)

the Aliant bms, as many others(?), starts working at ~14.6v.
that means, if you never reach this, the battery will never balance.
if you always reach this, the battery will die to early.

I've had an Aliant Lithium in my S1000rr race bike for four years, never needed a charge, gets used one weekend a month and never over winter.
I've also had one in my FJR road bike for three years, no issues either (it labours when starting from freezing, but turn it over a couple of times and leave it for a minute and it fires. Cold hits lithium batteries)

On my V4R I keep it on a trickle charger, but only because it has a tracker.

Anything plugged into the bike on the port under the seat will put some drain on the battery.

I had a customer who had a battery tender USB stick installed on his V4S for keeping his phone charged while riding and even though nothing was plugged in when the bike was keyed off the battery died. I measured the current from the USB and sure enough, it was drawing power. Same thing must be happening when the USB data logger is plugged into the diagnostic port.

Hi, so I wanted to clarify on a few topics brought up in this thread:
  1. Does the V4R come from the factory with a lithium ion battery and if so, what sort of trickle charger
  2. If I disable DDA from the bike's settings, is that sufficient to prevent it from drawing power? Or do I have to physically disconnect it?
Thanks.

K, guess I can't edit my post so I have to update here. I've got an answer on the battery, just need to figure out the DDA. When I lift up the seat, I do see this plug but I'm not sure if it is the DDA. Doesn't look very much like what's in the Ducati literature (not red) but it does have the "clamp" on it. Is this the DDA?

No that looks to just be a cover the DDA would be a longer drive. How often do you ride you bike. I have had my Speciale 4 years and no issues with my lithium battery.

Today is just my second day with it, but with my previous bike I'd sometimes go 5+ days without riding it. It had a lead acid battery though. In the winter, I'm likely going to remove the battery and bring it in to trickle charge (no outlets in the parking garage).

That is just the cover. The DDA is red with USB at one end and connector into that plug at the other end. Came in its own box in the backpack that came with my bike. The DDA also seems bike agnostic (I used the one from one of my V4Rs in the other with no dramas).

Thanks. I suppose it'd make sense that the PO did in fact install it in the correct location which appears to be further underneath the seat. I just took the seat itself off, but I'd have to remove the tail section correct?
