So as you guys read a few weeks ago my bike was having a issue with clutch drag in 1st gear then it got the wobbles in the plates. Well I was going to fix it my self with putting in a new clutch but once I sent the dealer a video of the wobble they said no bring it in there is something very wrong there not just a worn/warped clutch plate. Anyway long story short the bike spun a bearing. Word to the wise if your V4R starts to have clutch drag its already to late. But Ducati did step up and pay for the repair with a little arm twisting at first they did not want to. But once they new it spun a bearing they agreed to do a one time fix with I am very grateful that Ducati did this otherwise the dealer was stating 4500 to repair the clutch (WHICH IS CRAZY) I think they were ordering every part know too man in the parts diagram LOL.

Now going forward the clutch is not warrantied so make sure you are not letting the clutch basket get to beat up cause that is what they think may have caused the bearing to take a ..... Sure most of you no this but Ducati says the V4R clutch plates need to be changed every 3K.

No from what I was told its the bearing behind the clutch basket. I am no expert just reporting what I was told.

No worries - I’m no expert either. :)

Typically the phrase “spun bearing” refers to the big end rod bearing, but it is ambiguous and could theoretically refer to any bearing that gets spun in its seat (I doubt the clutch bearing did, but again - I’m no expert).

Thank God it wasn’t the rod bearing though! That repair would have been a good bit more expensive.

3000k’s Whoa! Lets see, two rears, one front an oil change, set of plates..... it aint a cheap sport! Glad Ducati came to the warranty party though, but given the premium nature of the R I’d be pretty annoyed if they didnt.

Does anyone have the directions for the clutch plate change I need it for the future. Ex the torque specs and is there any sprecial tools involved to just change the plates not the clutch basket?

If someone has done the dry clutch conversion those directions are the same and would be very much appreciated.

Very interesting. there was a guy on here from Houston who was selling his R b/c of COVID related financial complications... I thought he had priced it pretty high (Karl Kani was quite adamant about it being overpriced)... it had about 2000 miles on it. Guess it was even more over-priced given this potential issue...

When he sold it he wiped the thread, which I thought was weird.

Then a month later he was posting about his V4 SF... but that's another story.

I really want an R so I follow all the threads, but i also really like my S.

The actual amount of additional maintenance for a R is not to be understated. The clutch replacements, more frequent desmo service and such. For dedicated race bike it's to be expected for the casual track day bike it's a little excessive compared to a "regular" S which is already quite capable for such use.

Man I don’t know what to think about Ducati anymore, I finally get one and all I hear are horrible stories.

My clutch lasted 1300 miles
Did u change it yourself? I was wondering for future replacements is it just the 30mm nut and the Allen screws to change out the plates? I Watched a guy on you tube do the conversion kit. But it didn’t show him actually torque the 30mm nut. He did mention it was 190 newton meters.

It’s not a rod bearing or even a transmission bearing that failed

If you ever looked at how that evo slipper works the secondary spring is under the retainer with a DRY bearing (dry clutch remember). I am not referring to the bearing in the hat for disengagement there is a second bearing down inside. It is a wearable part. So are the springs. So is the hub with it’s tiny Italian balls and ramps

Bottom line is it’s a race clutch. Get me those parts Jay. Please

There yours as soon as they release them. 90 days from the day it’s repaired you will have them if Ducati doesn’t claim them. Which they won’t I don’t think. They never claimed my motor parts and that was 18k repair.

People tend to whinge and raise issues more on Internet forums though than gush. For every bad story there are a host of others who had no issues and a smaller number who also had the issue but don’t post.

Yep. Probably at least 10:1. Human nature - the satisfied customer tells a friend; the dissatisfied customer tells 10.

The internet just amplifies the phenomenon.
