V4R Spun Bearing

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

The factory ships the bikes with a 30nm secondary spring. STM designed the adjustable clutch and offers secondary springs from 30-80nm. The secondary spring works AGAINST the balls/ramps that are in the hub disengaging the clutch on decel. Running the lightest spring promotes the most slip. I wonder why know one burning thru clutch packs tried a stiffer spring and posted the results? I don’t own a R (not a v4). I’m just trying to help the guys that do : )

People tend to whinge and raise issues more on Internet forums though than gush. For every bad story there are a host of others who had no issues and a smaller number who also had the issue but don’t post.

Also people come to forums a lot of the time with problems they want help with and ,this is more of a technical/enthusiast forum so you get to see a lot of problems. I really appreciate these threads, shows a certain reality of ownership. An R is not just another street bike, its essentially a track bike you can ride on the street, beautiful but the maintenance is next level!

Man I don’t know what to think about Ducati anymore, I finally get one and all I hear are horrible stories.

I wouldn't be concerned that's what the warranty is for. I have had 3 Ducati's 998R, 1199S (Blown Motor, 3 Dash Boards, Water Pump) and V4R (Clutch issue as stated) all the have had issues and I new that going into buying them but I always get the warranty. So I am 3 for 3 and Ducati has fixed them all. Still regret getting rid of the 998R.

Now Going to other brands I have had also had problems so this is not just a Ducati thing by no means. Ninja ZX-6R very first bike ever cam chain tensioner broke on that, MV Agusta F4 blew up, GSXR 1000 motor blew. There is a pattern here I buy these bikes the first year they come out and I am basically the test but I know that and again that is what the warranty is for. Yamaha R1 was the only bike to not have any issues.

I always explain it to people these are race bikes with blinkers and they will break. It's just a matter of when. Just like owning a Ferrari just know where near the price tag but they all have maintenance now the V4R has a bit extra (clutch plates) now that I know to keep up on the clutch its not concerning. Clutch plates are 250 bucks deff not a deal breaker. The bike alone is the funnest thing I have ever been on unbelievable speed and power.

Exactly agree with this which is why this thread was made. I wanted to inform people that own this bike (V4R) to make sure you keep up on the clutch plates. Also the video I posted of the clutch wobbling I am sure people wanted to know what caused that I know I would of.

thanks for putting my mind at ease!

Somewhat related, would 1199R or a 1299R be as maintenance intensive as the new V4R? I’m looking at a couple of possibilities out there and a few of them are R models but not the V4R. Would love any feedback from you guys.

What do you mean by newer model twin R than the 1199R? There’s only one, and that would be the 1299R, correct? Are you saying avoid the 1299R, but the 1199R is tops?

Or are you saying 1199/1299R are not good for street use period, full stop?

Don wouldn't know all his info is inaccurate and false let alone zero experience.

1199R 2015-16 was the last years for the R models. The 1299FE was 2017 basically same bike different exhaust all just fine for the street if you maintain them thoroughly.

That’s how I understand what he was saying - avoid the 1299r for a street bike (unless you’re ok with possibly having to rebuild the motor every few thousand miles).

15-17 Panigale R all have one compression ring. 1199 and 1299 both

Don’t listen to the forum call any reputable high performance motor builder and tell them you’re building a motor with larger than 4 1/2 inch bore and a short skirt piston an inch of skirt and this 13.2:1 compression motor is only gonna have one compression ring and it’s not going to be a gapless ring and you’re gonna run it on the street and ask them how many miles you’ll get outta that combo

I heard the R models had 2 rings, vs 3 for the other models. Regardless, I'm mainly a street rider who does the occasional trackday. Sounds like I need to focus on the S models--
Now my decision is between 1199/1299/V4.

The V4 is the undisputed power king, but I'm coming off of (2) 1098s, so any Panigale will be a power upgrade for me, albeit with different power delivery characteristics.

I'll search the site for threads comparing the 3---! Thanks all,
Greg
