V4R Winglets Explained

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I can explain it fairly simply. On a street bike or even a dedicated track bike with anything less than a pro rider under 180 mph, completely fricking worthless. Another "look at me" gimmick. Next time you take your winged laden machine for a trip down the street stop and remember all the times you made fun of the ..... driving a silly import with a wing on it. Just say no to the winglet and avoid the head shaking and ridicule that you will no doubt endure for riding a bike that now looks like a chicken hawk. If your going to ride a bike with ears on it on the street you might as well ...... it up all the way and do all the sponsor stickers by companies that you are not sponsored by and the number of your favorite racer whom you have no affiliation with. Don't ride a Ducati on the street with winglets and if you're going to do it on the track, make sure your skill sets are enough to offset the hecklers.

The article states the wings start to work at speeds as low as 62 mph, its not like they only work at 180. What's up with everyone going straight to only pro riders can use them so why bother. Let people have their things

Exactly!

I knew it was a matter of progression of how the downforce works. It's simple logic. Most wings work that way! For bikes, cars, planes etc. And it's pretty simple physics, and guess what physics applies all over the place and for everybody.

In our case, winglet physics works for both street and track, pro or novice, wet or dry, man or woman etc. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a technically challenged person.

Don't get it what's with all the hate and bashing! Aside from looks which is truly subjective, winglet physics is not subjective. What is subjective though, is the utility gained from those added downforces but that is everyone's personal appreciation and should not be discarded, bashed or laughed upon. Doing so, only shows ignorance and infatuation!

If I had one, I’d add some neon lights to them to show them off a bit better. Perhaps even add dimples to them for better airflow. That or add razor blades to the leading edges to slice bugs and birds in half, mad max style yo.

AndreiD. "Technically challenged" bahahahaha. Go do a forum search on my posts. I guess you are a more capable rider than all pro's out there who manage to struggle their bikes around the track without the use of winglets. It's amazing they can stay on the bike at all. If you want to go into the engineering and physics of ground vehicle airfoil sections we can but to save forum space we can quickly draw a conclusion on the winglet topic. Absolutely @"!king ridiculous and nothing more than a marketing gimmick. You will never ever be able to detect a performance benefit from a winglet unless you are that skilled a rider that you are riding that bike so aggressively and skillfully that you have pushed the bike beyond its performance envelope that you now need aerodynamic assistance. I guarantee "that guy" isn't on this forum. Maybe Ducati could focus on a decent set of rear-sets or some decent control components instead of some GP inspired gimmick. Fortunately they are removable so when you do realize how silly you look, you can remove them then again if they are dealer installed, they will most likely fall off anyhow. Have a great day

So that fact that they added them to the bike for WSBK has no merit? They also added a dry clutch so that some can put an open clutch cover on is that a waste?

Most of the bikes we purchase are a waste based on the idea that we are not worthy. In the case of the R I don't think Ducati was worried about the normal rider per say. They built a bike that had the best opportunity to take the to the top.

IMHO - If you like the wings leave them on.

I agree and I disagree with you. Yes, most of us will not benefit from this winglets. We will not shave a second of our laptime because we fitted them.
That said, the whole bike is overkill for all of us. Nobody here will use the full potential of the V4. I bet nobody here will use the full potential of a R6. So, should we all be riding ZXR400 from 1991?

It is wonderful these machines exist! We can own a bike with all the technology that is available nowadays. Electronic suspension is not necessary. We don't really need quickshifter or blipper. Hell, a pro will start by switching off the ABS, maybe even traction control.
But it is fun to have. For me, not for show (i am not a coffee-hipster), but just to be amazed myself. I just like watching this bike. I like riding it. I like reading and writing about it.
I will never be Dovi, and it is not my ambition as well.
But what a bike...

What's up with peoples boner for saying only Dovi would benefit from winglets? They were designed to improve high speed stability, reduce the tendency of wheelies and assist in high speed braking. All of those would assist anybody

ok...so from ShadeTree Mechanic (garage bike builds ala Orange County Choppers) to Aerodynamicist all in one run-on-sentence - "how profound" ?!

....just what do you tell swim team coaches (to advise not to wear swim caps) or bicycle team coaches (not to wear latex) :)...or shave their legs :)

.....simple High School Physics dictates aero wings do something at any speed...

i'd guess Haters gonna Hate...or you have never flown in a plane before ;)

come back when you know what you're talking about....or better yet, go to a local airport and learn something

#starbucks

and they make you believe you can fly

I will NEVER understand some people!!!! I’m glad some of you feel so HIGHLY of yourself you can put other people down and everything else!! Do some people just come on forums just too ..... and COMPLAIN about everything?? Sure does appear that way!!!! I don’t care if 99% of most humans will never get the benefits out of the wings, it’s your options if you want to spend 40-50G on a bike to ride around the block!!!! Me , I’m an Expert club racer with some titles and over 50+ podiums and I don’t like the wings, But I will never call you ignorant or anything else if you do..Enjoy your day and most importantly NEVER let anyone change what you like, even if it is just a sales gimmick.

Wings have been around since the early '80's. Nothing new.
