Hair thinning scissors are specialized scissors which are made specifically for cutting hair from the head. They're also sometimes called hairdressing scissors, barber scissors, or hair scissors. They range significantly in length from about 5 inches to about 7 inches, and most often have an attached tag, called a finger ring, or a single ring at the end of a hair pin.
Like other shearing tools, hair thinning scissors are made with several different types of blades, and it's important to know the different types so that you can choose the right pair for your needs. Some scissors use a serrated edge, while others have a smooth edge. There are also scissors which use an alternating pattern to create layers of hair, and there are some which simply cut hair straight across. All of these different types of scissors work differently, and many hairdressers will recommend a particular set of hair thinning scissors to their clients to make their jobs easier.
A hairdresser might first demonstrate to a client how to use hair thinning scissors by pulling on a strip of fabric to show the difference between hair being cut from the head, and hair thinning strips being used to make the hair thin. The hairdresser then cuts strips of cloth along three sides of the head and attaches a thinning shear to each one. A fac n (or full-face nipper) is used to remove the hair from the scalp. This procedure is usually done over the sink or in a separate area away from the face. When the hair has been removed, the stylist might show the client how to put the hair-thinning strips back into place, but most clients have no trouble following this step.
