Nailed it.

All of this is very true. For 99.9% of riders, the R will not be an "upgrade". The only exception might be the Expert racers running at the pointy end of the field. But even then, if they have built/tuned their 1299S properly, I would be willing to bet their lap times would be the same.

and for most people that buy an R... it's because they can and they want to :D.

CONGRATS on the new addition Kevin! Enjoy it in all its glory!

I agree. At the end of the day, as long as the buyer sees it as an upgrade and thinks it is worth the money, that is all that matters.

i'd still like to read detailed impressions of the "upgrade" from mod...

The reason for me to upgrade is the weight of the R, I guess not at this price , when I saw this post I got jealous, what's the deal he got , congratulations on new bike anyways

I picked up my 2016 R not to long ago and just did a track day over the weekend. while I can't say to much as I am still in the break-in stage. This bike revs fast and the power is all over the place. While I never had the chance to ride the 1299S model to compare. The R is only 400lb wet and with some things changed out or replaced. you can get it under 400 which me to is just nuts. This is my first Duc and while it took some time to learn to ride this bike. I love everything about it so far. Coming off a ZX10R that dyno at 186 and sitting on this feels way different. The weight on the R l think makes a big difference plus not to mention this motor revs extremely fast for a twin.
Both the 1299S and R are great bikes and we are very lucky to have one. Go out and enjoy :)

You can put an exhaust and a lightweight battery on the S and it will weigh less than the R. Then by the time you swap to a 520 chain kit with lightweight sprocket carrier and get rid of some unnecessary stuff, you end up with a bike that is ridiculously light.

My race prepped 1299S weighs less than my race prepped R6.

I believe you can get 0% financing for 60 months DOC and can probably get them discounted to 31k or less.

Ok, I've been away for awhile. For me I've always wanted a R, going through my cancer crap I figured there was no time like the present. Yes ducati has 0% fixed, between that, selling my akra and having a good bit of positive equity for my 1299 things worked out. You can probably get a dealer to do around 31 for a R right now.
Now to the bike, the 1299 is a phenomenal machine, I have to admit it I was hesitant to make the jump at first. The R is different, the engine raps out fast and feels smoother. You can tell it is a race bike, and for me when it goes the rush I get is something completely different. I'm happy with the R, I have no complaints, (other than I wish i had the S led headlight). Is it a better bike? Maybe, the S was an amazing machine the R is different and I love that.
Once the weather here clears up and I can actually ride it I'll give a better impression. Now I'll be the first to admit I am not the fastest, yes I do track days and I can hold my own but I am no where near setting a lap record. I do spirited canyon carving and track when I can. Just to give everyone an idea of where my opinion comes from with my riding.

Do it big Kevin!!!

Absolutely unbelievable my man!

Enjoy every minute of that beautiful ride and as stated by man Mike above me - ride that thing Long, Hard, and Fast just as it should be too!

Cant wait to see and hear how much fun you had on the track with it as well, right??

Oh, the R is an upgrade for sure for all riders......in cost :D

And THAT is all that matters. :)

We all sit around and debate "better/best" etc all day on every forum, because that is what we do...especially during the offseason when many of us can't ride.

As far as which bike is tangibly better (excluding rider preferences or skill, soley referring to the bike itself), that can be debated all day long. At the end of the day, whether we are discussing a 2001 GSXR 600 or a 2015 1299S, the rider is always the limiting factor.

I have to apologize for getting into that discussion on your new bike thread, I should save stuff like that for generic threads. I in no way meant to tarnish your purchase or decision in any way. Like I said, if you are happy and you feel it is an upgrade, that is all that truly matters. The rest of it is just making conversation to pass the time. :)

Hey man, it's all good. I get it, at the end of the day we are all riding amazing machines and that's what's matters. Once track season starts I'll definetly give a write up

Wait until you've run it in. You'll never want another bike again, the grin just keeps getting bigger.........

The engine is just nuts

P.S. It will do everything you want it to on the road, no issue, there is no compromise here

Like others have said if you are happy that's all that matters. It's your money so do as you please. But I personally did the opposite ....I down graded some say.
I had a 899 and traded it for a 2015 675R but feel like i gained more.
Horsepower isn't everything...sometimes you get slower because you are scared of it/fighting with it. But i get it! The cool/exotic factor of owning a R is off the chart.

And there is alot of truth in that, I've seen guys at the track with a new 20k bike and an old duct tape held together gsxr 600 and can pull similar lap times. I'll be the first to admit it won't make me faster at all, I've always wanted a R and this was an opportunity at it. So I'll enjoy ;)
