most of us don't NEED the street homologated versions of the bikes manufacturers race each other with in World Superbike.

but the fact that these bikes are the actual basis for the WSBK racebikes makes them special to us. It's therefore worth every penny that we spend.

I was faced with the S or R question. I chose the S, after being very frank with my riding. It's almost entirely on the street, so I benefit from every extra bit of torque, as well as the power curve coming in at a lower RPM - it's still a Panigale though, so the 1299S still needs roughly 1000 more RPMs than the Testastretta motors before the freight train torque shows up.

The compromise was to get the S (and not have to wait more than a couple weeks) and then add in an aftermarket budget equal to the OTD price of an R. I ended up blowing past that, but not by too much ;)

I contemplated getting an R instead of another S as my backup bike. I was thinking it would be easier since in theory it should require less mods being a race homologation unit.

But the thing is, all of the stuff that was done to the S would be done to the R also. Things like rearsets, levers, air filter, Ti bolts, 520 kit and quick-change sprocket carrier, RB tuner, Stompgrip, bodywork, etc etc etc etc. The only things I might not have to worry about is the exhaust and battery (doesn't the R come with a lightweight Li battery)?

Other than that, race prepping an R wouldn't be any easier or faster than when they race prepped the 1299S.

It's the engine where the big differences are though. To replicate that will take more than an air filter and sprocket change. Ask Wilkson, he did it with the 2013 R

If you're happier with the shorter top end then fine.

The R would have been a better bike . As stated the motor is a real piece of work .

"Need" is a relative term. The Ducati test rider was able to take a bone stock 1299S off the showroom floor, mudflap, mirrors and everything...and ride within 4sec of the time Chaz put down on his full Factory 1199R.

There isn't a single person on this forum, myself included, that can say they are/will be "held back" by the shortcomings of a 1299S.

Does the R rev a little quicker and have a few extra RPM on the top to work with, sure. But none of my tracks have a straightaway long enough to reach the top of 6th gear on a Liter bike, even with a +2 rear sprocket. And as far as the motor building RPMs a little quicker, that is nothing a little gearing can't help.

I am sure the R is a great bike. But for anyone to say or think someone "needs" an R because a 1299S isn't fast enough is purely laughable.

Considering how some people will go faster on a 10 year old 600 than they can on a Panigale, to think anyone needs to "upgrade" from a 1299S to an 1199R to improve their lap times/finishes is comical.

But what if they really NEED IT? Like. REALLY NEED IT? :D

Haha, well of course that is a different story :D.

People also seem to forget the 1299S has improved geometry, better midrange and a broader spread of power. Which translates to improved handling, better corner exits and more user friendliness for 99% of riders.

The R has a peakier motor and a more RPMs on the top end, but it is highly possible that more people could actually go faster on the 1299S due to the wider range of power/midrange and more user friendly geometry.

Of course, we are splitting hairs between arguably the 2 best bikes in the Universe. Which means this conversation is pretty dumb. But so is saying somebody actually needs to or would benefit from going to an 1199R. If they had a 2001 CBR, absolutely. From a 1299S, I find that a little silly.

But as always, this is just my opinion. :)

I think for many of us on this forum, including myself, "needs" and "wants" are often the same within our personable financial limits, whatever those limits may be.
We are a privileged few, and as such we often loose sight of this. In truth, I do not need a Panigale; however, I sure did ache for it until I had one.
So, if you are one of the lucky few well-off to want/need an 1199, 1199S, 1199R, 1199SL, 1299, 1299S - I say WTF, why not?
Just remember, once you have what you need/want, you may be disappointed if it does not jive with how you actually use it.

You clearly missed my point.

I'm saying a few simple bits of bling won't turn your 1299 into the R.

Let's please not turn this thread into the dreaded base vs S vs R comparo. They're all faster than us. Gentlemen, enjoy your purchases!

Wow.... that escalated.
So having ridden the bike so more it is an amazing machine. My first panigale was a '12 base and that was an awesome machine, second was the 1299S, again, that was a phenomenal bike, I had a hard time parting with it. As everyone said, it won't make you faster, whether I ride a base, S or R the bike isn't my limiting factor. As many have said we are all lucky to have these amazing bikes. The R was something I've lusted after. I see it as a piece of exotica that makes you feel special, they all do that but it's probably more of a mental thing. So let's all agree we are lucky and have badass bikes

And my point is that for many people, that could be a good thing. ;)

Personally, If I would have wanted an R, that is what I would have gotten. I specifically chose the 1299S instead. :)

So from your Experience you think an average Joe Shmoe at the track would be more comfortable on a 1299 do to ergonomics then on 1199 R?

That's it . While lap times on both bikes might be similar the extra revs and the lighter internals and the flawless revving of the R might just help nail that pass your trying to pull .
The poor people on the 1299 will just have to try harder .

New to this

hey guys new to the forum. Haven't been riding in a while just sold my GTR and said let me see what's new with Ducati, now I always loved Ducati since I could remember. I will be 39yrs in two weeks I have a 2002 748s battery dead from sitting so anyway I go into the bike dealer up the street from me and look @ the Ducati's still saying I still am happy with my 02 but they are nice. Then in the corner I see 2015 R now it is true I like the craftsmanship of things and things most don't see or have so not like I will track or anything neither did I with 748's . So the salesmen I knew since I was like 22yrs old ask him could is see it he pulls the bike out I sit on it. why did I do that, I was looking forward to a extra $1300 a month since selling the GTR. So I say well let me see what they say about getting approved with Ducati 30min later he calls me back and says 5yrs 0% and the bike is like $34k but since its a left over 15 we are selling it for 30k. Man I know this doesn't happen everyday with the discount but wonder if 30k is worth it now last time I got my 748s it was 13k. Is it really that rare he was telling me they got two all year. I will ride it for sure but really I just want it for the craftsmen ship the work that's put into it I would just feel lucky to ride off with it. all this said is this deal good? Do you R owners look back and say I could of got a fully loaded Honda accord or is it so worth it once you ride this beast guess I'm asking any buyers remorse out there?

it is crazy deal so take the deal. and if someone regret of buying R that person is either ... or got a real mental problem.

I'm was thinking the same thing but not that on top of my research yet so was asking. I know how things get a good name and can live with that but the product it's worth it anymore. Never thought this with ducati but making sure it's still have that race goal.
