most of us don't NEED the street homologated versions of the bikes manufacturers race each other with in World Superbike.
but the fact that these bikes are the actual basis for the WSBK racebikes makes them special to us. It's therefore worth every penny that we spend.
I was faced with the S or R question. I chose the S, after being very frank with my riding. It's almost entirely on the street, so I benefit from every extra bit of torque, as well as the power curve coming in at a lower RPM - it's still a Panigale though, so the 1299S still needs roughly 1000 more RPMs than the Testastretta motors before the freight train torque shows up.
The compromise was to get the S (and not have to wait more than a couple weeks) and then add in an aftermarket budget equal to the OTD price of an R. I ended up blowing past that, but not by too much
