What next for Ducati?

A cassette gearbox would be 5 more pounds and a weaker case most likely.

My gears seem spaced perfectly. Not sure it's worth the tradeoff.

It's one of those things where if you've never used one, you don't know what you're missing.

Would be a redesign for sure. But nothing inherently weak about it. Depends on the design. But ability to tune a transmission for a particular track would (for me) be a plus.

Wishful thinking though. I don't see Ducati (or any M/C manufacturer) doing it for street machines.

Currently all the GP bikes, CBR 1000RR, Aprilia RSV4, ZX10R, Ducati Desmosedici RR, and etc use a cassette gearbox. It makes gear changes and replacement so much easier. Not having to split the cases on a Ducati V-twin would be a huge improvement. With the advancements in metalergy, vaccuum casting technologies, and the like, the loss of rigidity from an opening in the case/block for a cassette gearbox would likely be minimal. The increase in weight from a strengthen gearbox cluster would also be likely minimal too. Keep in mind, these changes would be integrated into the overall design of the engine. IMHO

Kawi does it on the ZX-10r and ZX-6r, Aprilia on the RSV4, MV on theirs. Honda dropped it in the latest generation of Fireblade, but the previous ones all had them.
