Hey guys, I really need your advice. I just received delivery on my Pani S demo bike as listed in this thread:
http://ducati1199.com/new-users/3383-greeting-frozen-minnesota.html

Long story short. They sold it to me as an ABS model, but it turns out its not - their mistake. Since this is a demo bike (hense used, and slightly reduced price), they can't just swap it for a new model w/ ABS.

I don't know what to do now. I really wanted ABS, espeically after reading that most people recommended having it. I can return the bike for a refund, but I'm torn since I got a good price on an S model w/ Termi's. However, I could go buy a band new base w/ ABS, put on Termi slip-ons and still be cheaper in price. So I ask, what would you do? While I have raced on the track, and do ride hard, this will be a street bike and probably never see a track. Is having a used S w/o ABS worth it compared to having a base W/ ABS for similiar price? Thanks.

Get the refund and make me an offer on my S w/ ABS. And full Termi's.
(it is the bike you want, after all ;-)

tough call there man! not asking what you paid for it, but since they dropped the ball on this - and admit that openly, then they should make some concessions to give you a near cost deal on what you REALLY want man. Id discuss this with more than just the sales guy, go to GM or owner and see what they have to offer. If there was something in print about it being an ABS model then perhaps contact Ducati themselves?

To be honest I dont know the specific worth of ABS and its a personal choice for sure. I know they can add it if it came down to it, but that may cost more than its worth. Ask them to make it right by throwing a slip on in or something more than just a tank protector ya know? Dont know how this slipped by you during transaction but thats beside the point now I guess. Do your best to weigh the options and see how worth it they can make it to keep you as their customer. If not, I can get you a smokin deal on a bike but I am VERY far from you bro! After all, your winter probably lasts alot longer than most up there so you have some time to see the 2013 models and what they can do for you on one of them!

How bad is it going to eat at you knowing you wanted ABS? Only you can answer that question.

I've got an "S" w/ABS and I love it. However the reality is if I'm really pushing it that hard on the street to use the ABS I should probably be on the track. Granted there are exceptions (say a car pulls out in front of you).

Good luck on your decision.

The guys at Ducati MN are great guys, so I don't think they did this on purpose at all. However, if it was sold with ABS you deserve ABS.

I'd work a deal on the bike you want, the 1199 is expensive enough without "settling" for something you really didn't want. ABS is nice to have and you can always turn it off.

It was definitely an accident, and I know there was no malice involved on their part. They really are sorry for the confusion.

That said, I'll tell you what I paid. It was $20,500 + tax/fees = $21,894 (as seen in that picture). The Termi's were just slip-ons, not a full system.

They have a 2012 base w/ABS for $17k. I'm guessing they would put the Term slip-on's on for $1500 (which is also something I kinda wanted being a 1st time Duc guy).

Get the refund and make me an offer on my S w/ ABS. And full Termi's.

I'd be interested in hearing what you had -- though you do live in NY. Doesn't sound like shipping would be very cheap.

I would get the bike that you wanted with ABS. If not you always think you should have done it.
The dealer may be willing to do something to help you out if you ask them.

I'd keep the non-ABS one, get them to discount further, or throw in some bling/headers. ABS is really over rated. 99.999% of the time you ride it, you don't need it. Plus it adds weight, and for all we know contributes to the heat issue that supposedly the bike has.

trauma your too much with this heat stuff lol. what would i do hmmm. i would look to get a deal on the TRI. get everything get it close to cost. do you really want a demo. all those people riding it. i wouldnt but thats just me. Take the try. have them take off for the termi cause they were on the demo. then have them take off more for their screw up. get the tri brand new for the s price .

I believe you can have the ABS installed. Get in touch with your dealer or Ducati North America and look into it. Would be much more efficient and less time consuming just to have the install done. I am sure your dealer could cut you a good deal on it too. I don't want to give out details because I am unsure of the whole process. But I may be able to get in touch with someone if you can't get your answer from them.

if it was me i would not be happy,

But ask yourself would you of bought the bike if you had known it did not have abs.

If the answer is no then hand it back and get a refund if yes then ask them for a further discount or for some extras thrown in.

seems to be a few s with abs and extras for sale in the classifieds on this site and your money should get you more for less $$$.

First of all, I seriously doubt if ABS can be installed - at least from a practical standpoint. It takes hardware and software and the software today is usually tied to the VIN of the vehicle when they do updates. I cannot absolutely say that for the Ducati, but there is a good chance that is the case.

I am a strong believer in ABS. I admit I did not get it on my Ninja 1000 for reasons that I won't go into, but I'm a believer that if it's available you should get it. If there is any chance you'll ride the bike in the rain especially. The tires that come on the Panigale look like they would be pathetic in the rain - but again, I'm only guessing in that I have not ridden one in the rain.

Another reason to consider getting an ABS bike is that after the 2012's all Panigales will have ABS. When you go to sell the bike potential buyers are going to see a lot of ABS bikes on the market that are going to compete with you trying to sell a bike without it.

At the end of the day, it depends upon your riding circumstances and what you want. I personally would rather have a base bike with ABS than an "S" without, but that's just me.

What does the bill of sale say? What did you sign? Does it say it's a Panigale S ABS?

Thanks everyone. I really appreciated all the feedback. Though honestly, its not making the descision easier. :)

I'm really learning toward returning it and getting a brand new bike instead. I don't mind used, but like mark419ny said, having a lot of previous joy riders could prove bad. That said, it being used contributed to me buying it. I'm not rich and really extended myself just to afford the used S (I can't afford a new S or Tri (sorry mark419ny). My dilemma is due to the bar being set high (S model) and now I need to mentally convince myself that a base meets my needs just fine. There is no doubt though, I will have a Pani! Its just a matter of what I go with.

Oh, and I was told you cannot add ABS. Theoretically anything is possible, but realistically it requires a different wire harness, etc which would make it more expensive to add to a base then just buying an S.

What does the bill of sale say? What did you sign? Does it say it's a Panigale S ABS?
Nope. It actually just says 2012 Panigale (not even S). I realize I probably look like an idiot for not noticing it, but since it was a used bike, it didn't have a traditional "sticker" tag with details. I asked if it had ABS and both sales people said yes. That was good enough for me. It wasn't until I got the bike, read the owners manual, turned on the bike and noticed the "ABS" icon was not listed on the screen that I realized the discrepancy.

Not looking like an idiot to me. .... happens. Hell, how many of us forgot to read the spec sheets on our ex-wives?

I say to send it back, have them send you the one you want and get them to throw in these leathers for the trouble..

I'd return it and keep shopping if they won't install ABS for free.

I've shipped two bikes this year with this shipper an Ebay '86 GSX-R750R LTD and a Craigslist '03 999R. If you have any concerns about a bike, you can buy a pre-purchase inspection of the bike from a dealer local to the seller, or ask someone on the forum to do an inspection.
