What would you have done (R1 wanted a piece of me today)

Well, I'm not sure your point. I posted this as a fun topic. I did not race him. I let him go. No way I am going to risk a ticket for street racing on a busy freeway especially. Street racing got a lot of attention in Houston about ten years ago mostly because of what guys in cars were doing, and I had a few Corvettes at that time and was around some of those folks. I'm not going to lie, in my earlier days I would and did. And I suppose on a really deserted road I still might be tempted as I'm very competitive. But I have not done it now in probably ten years, and never have on a motorcycle btw.

As to the "take it to the track folks", I did roadrace bikes competitively on the track 30 years ago, and I have taken my Corvettes to the dragstrip several times over the past ten years.

If you re bulky and heavy and he s a midget, you may be in for a nasty surprise ...

I always go for option #3 as well. Not only do I have nothing to prove, but VA has really strict laws about speeding as well as racing so it simply isn't worth the risk, IMHO. It's hard enough to keep a license around here without racing people.

It took my post to get you to "break the suspense"

That's why I threw it out there.

No one cares what you do. But b safe about it.
You may have confidence in your abilities, but know nothing about the R1 dude.

Not worth getting injured and giving him a piece, literally, of your body after a wreck

Take it to the track.

It would appear we are in agreement then.

how did you "wind up next to him" without trying?...

He slowed down - combination of traffic in his lane, then he slowed obviously to egg me on.

BTW, part of the story I did not tell is that I get off a major road in my area to ride home - with quite a few lights. At one light we got right next to each other at a stop. He gave me a high five signal then pointed up ahead. There was nothing ahead of us and I was thinking he wanted to race. Neither one of us took off fast at all, but about 1/2 mile ahead he signaled and turned into a boat ramp/parking area. I think it was obvious he wanted me to pull in by the way he was signaling. I did not pull in. One I was ready to be home, and two I have a thing about strangers like that. I'm sure it would have been no big deal as there were a lot of people around, but I just didn't see any need to stop and shoot the bull with him.

I met a best friend that way - I saw a yellow flash way up ahead of me one night, and I ride fast, but it was difficult to catch him. When I did, he was on the new (back then) BMW Red/Yellow K1. Now that bike had a heat problem, burned the piss out of your left shin.

Your likelihood of getting a ticket is far greater than a trophy. Common sense, and you will live longer.

Take it to the track.

Ill get flamed but just gotta say I was rather impressed with a ZR1 I ended up racing....

I guess I'm getting old, but I have absolutely zero desire to race anybody and truly couldn't care less whether or not they think their bike is "faster" or not. I like to enjoy the ride, period, not to prove anything to anybody. And that enjoyment usually comes from trying to execute my best curvie turns, often below 40mph. Besides, any monkey can hit the throttle and go fast. I doubt I'd just "ignore" him, as I would takes steps to get far away from him, to avoid the accident he will cause and/or be in, and that squids like that lessen my enjoyment of my own ride. But again, that's just me.

I'd be afraid if I raced him he might beat me, then, hanging my head in shame I'd have to start a thread and confess that I was beaten by an R1.

Too old and too mediocre of a rider to chance it! ;)

Good point, Chris. I change my answer. If he was on a Ninja 250 "R" then I would race him. Otherwise, I simply have nothing to prove. :D
