When horror stories become reality

Bypass the service dept. and everyone else. Always ask for Mike Allen. He is a reasonable guy. I've never had a problem getting a loaner--but then again I have spent a lot of money on motorcycles there...If you need anything, let me know!

While we are few on the forums venting our problems, there are very few stand alone Ducati shops anymore. I see technology progressing, but not the experience. Of course I don't want milk and cookies. It will either get better or worse after more gradual influence from Audi.

Also i understand your frustration but be glad they are going to fix it. It's under warranty, they could have declined and a massive world of Warcraft like battle could have ensued.

Even when they don't offer loaners go to your salesman and get them to help you out. Had the same issue after two bikes and a warranty issue. I went home on the same type ducati I dropped off.

Suck to hear that. I'll check my kickstand bolt tomorrow, just in case.

+1

The side stand did not go from tight to loose overnight. Had to be a gradual thing.

Nope! I had it happen on an 899. There doesn't have to be much warning at all! Until the bolt (The bolt furthest to the rear for me) is almost out there is enough tension to keep the kickstand in place. The front bolt holds everything and it isn't until the bolt is either out or on the edge that the kickstand can start pivoting. You wouldn't notice a difference unless you were looking specifically at the bolt so I'm not surprised he didn't notice until it was too late.

I noticed when my kickstand came down on a left hand 70 mph sweeper after an 8 hour day of riding... I was able to pick it up with my foot mid corner (Still have no idea how I did it) and get off the road. There were no warning signs that you would notice unless you were looking for them specifically. Up until it happened the stand functioned perfectly. Needless to say both bolts are now loctited to all hell and safety wired.

I would ask the dealer to loctite and saftey wire the new bolts to be safe!

I noticed some slop in my kickstand within the run in period, bolt had unwind itself and didnt have much left before it fell out. Loctite and tighen.

Why isn't the fix for the OP a tap and a helicoil which would not be involved at all?? 15 minute job?

How far are you from CommonWealth? I've never been there but I've heard great things about them and have a friend who's bought bikes there.

I'll do that to my kickstand just to be safe. A loose kickstand bolt cause a crack motor might be hard to get covered by the factory, specially when I've taken the kickstand out to shorten it since I've lowered the bike. They'll try to blame that on me if it happen ;)

Having driven to Pony a couple of times recently, we are a little more than 3hrs away.

Honestly...... your worrying about a loaner? You should be worrying about if they will cover you or not. ... if ducati can legally get out of this without being to blame they WILL NOT COVER YOU....

I don't see how I should be worried about coverage when I didn't install the kickstand, DUCATI did and it happened to a bike that's been ridden for 5 weeks! Furthermore This is the second brand new Ducati I bought from Motohio in the past 6 months. If they don't want to cover it I will repair myself sell it and switch brands and dealers. I've sent several customers there and I will continue to do so if I can have 100% faith in them. If they don't want to stand behind it. I'll switch brands and when people ask me where to buy something Ill give them my honest opinion of my experiences at that dealer and let them decide if they want to give them their business.

Still no word on whats going on ride now.

this happened on my 2012 BMW S1000RR, although it didn't get bad enough to crack anything. BMW issued a recall on all '12 S1000RRs to have new bolts put in. On that bike, IIRC, two bolts hold the sidestand to the frame. They both started working loose within a month of taking delivery. Mine got fixed quickly under warranty.

Bought mine from Northern Ohio Ducati in Akron. Have nothing but good things to say so far they have been Great. From my stand point. Carl the owner is always there to help from my exp. Only about 2 hours from Cbus depending on where you are.

commonwealth! I had a few LEDs go out on my 848 WHILE it was under warranty... Called indy and was told it wasn't covered and was quoted $218 for the whole mirror (even though LEDs popped out quite easily)... When I brought this up to my local mechanic a few months later (at which point my warranty expired), he contacted Commonwealth and let them know what happened... without any questions asked they sent me a new mirror and I sent in my old one only paying $10 for shipping. Great guys, great service!

funny how these threads can get thoughts into your head.

unable to deal with the obsessive paranoia this thread has caused, I went out and removed the lower left fairing, removed kickstand (which was on good and tight btw), cleaned threads, then reassembled with plenty of blue loctite.

had this thread not appeared, I'll bet anything that my kickstand wouldn't have given me a second thought over years of ownership lol
